KENYA: Ruto Pushes for Fair Global Trade Deal as Africa Demands More Than Raw Material Exports

By Moses Punyuah

Kenya President William Ruto has challenged global powers to forge fairer partnerships with Africa, saying the continent must move beyond exporting raw materials and instead become a hub for manufacturing, industrialization and value addition.

Speaking during the G7+ Working Session in Évian, France, Ruto said Africa's youthful population, fast-growing economies and vast natural resources position it at the centre of future global growth, but insisted that the continent must benefit directly from its resources.

“Let us process our minerals in Africa, manufacture in Africa, build industries in Africa and create jobs in Africa,” said Ruto.

The President joined world leaders, including France's Emmanuel Macron, U.S. President Donald Trump and India's Narendra Modi, in discussions focused on rebuilding international solidarity and fostering new global partnerships.

NIGERIA: FG Unveils N50m Support Fund for Cancer Patients

By, Ameenat Hamzat, Lagos, Nigeria

The Federal Government on Wednesday unveiled a N50 million Social Determinants of Health Fund for cancer patients to help vulnerable Nigerians overcome non-medical barriers that hinder access to treatment.

The Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Iziaq Salako, announced the initiative during the official unveiling of the fund's disbursement in Abuja, saying it would provide timely, equitable and accountable support to cancer patients facing challenges such as transportation, accommodation, feeding and inadequate social support.

According to the minister, more than 600 cancer patients have applied for assistance under the scheme, while over 200 applicants have been verified through a screening process involving medical directors and attending physicians at the facilities where they receive treatment.

Salako disclosed that each verified beneficiary would receive at least N100,000 to ease the social and economic burdens associated with cancer treatment.

"The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare will provide fifty million naira as government's initial contribution to the Social Determinants of Health Fund for cancer patients," the minister said.

He noted that despite investments in cancer care infrastructure, treatment subsidies and public awareness campaigns, many patients still struggle to commence or complete treatment because of indirect costs, including transportation, accommodation in cities where specialised services are available, food insecurity and lack of family support.

The minister explained that the initiative emerged from recommendations of the National Cancer Control Plan Technical Working Group established after the launch of Nigeria's National Cancer Control Plan 2026–2030.

He urged the managers of the fund to uphold transparency and accountability in administering the intervention.

"I will like to admonish the managers of the fund to ensure due diligence, transparency and accountability in its disbursement," Salako said.

The minister reaffirmed the Federal Government's commitment to reducing Nigeria's cancer burden by 50 per cent by 2030 through expanded prevention, screening and treatment services, assuring patients that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is determined to ensure that a cancer diagnosis does not become a death sentence.

NIGERIA: FG Launches Digital Switch Over Platform, Targets Jobs and Digital Economy Growth

By Ameenat Hamzat, Lagos, Nigeria

The Federal Government has officially launched Nigeria’s Digital Switch Over (DSO) platform, a major step aimed at modernising the country’s broadcasting industry and expanding opportunities within the creative and digital economy.

The launch, held at the headquarters of the Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited (NIGCOMSAT) in Abuja, was conducted under the supervision of the National Broadcasting Commission (National Broadcasting Commission).

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said the initiative represents a structural shift in Nigeria’s broadcasting ecosystem, with far-reaching economic implications.

“A fully implemented DSO ecosystem will create jobs, stimulate local manufacturing, expand audience reach, strengthen content production, increase advertising opportunities, and unlock new revenue streams for broadcasters and content creators,” Idris said.

He explained that the DSO is not merely a technological upgrade but part of a broader strategy to modernise broadcasting through a hybrid model combining digital terrestrial television, satellite delivery, and digital application-based platforms.

According to him, the Federal Government is also prioritising local content development and indigenous participation to ensure that Nigerian innovators and businesses benefit directly from the transition.

Minister of Communication, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, described the DSO as an early outcome of Nigeria’s broader digital infrastructure agenda, which is aimed at building a stronger digital economy.

He noted that ongoing investments in fibre-optic deployment and satellite expansion are central to achieving long-term connectivity and economic transformation.

Also speaking, the Director-General of NBC, Charles Ebuebu, said the platform goes beyond traditional broadcasting, describing it as a national communications infrastructure designed to expand access to information and digital opportunities.

The Managing Director of NIGCOMSAT, Jane Egerton-Idehen, said the satellite-powered platform would bridge connectivity gaps while creating new opportunities for stakeholders across broadcasting, manufacturing, and technology sectors.

“The DSO will strengthen Nigeria’s position as a leading digital broadcasting ecosystem in Africa,” she said.

The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Okezie Kalu, described the initiative as a milestone that will stimulate investment, create jobs, and expand opportunities across the media and creative industries.

The Federal Government said the rollout marks the beginning of a new phase in Nigeria’s broadcasting evolution and reinforces its commitment to digital transformation and economic diversification.

NIGERIA: INEC Completes PVC Collection For Ekiti Governorship Election

By Onoja Baba, Nigeria

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the successful conclusion of the collection of Permanent Voters’ Cards ahead of the Ekiti State Governorship Election scheduled for Saturday.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, INEC said the number of registered voters in the state has increased from 987,647 in 2023 to 1,059,360 in 2026 following the suspension of the Continuous Voter Registration exercise on May 15, 2026, and the subsequent clean-up of the voters’ register.

The commission also reported a slight improvement in PVC collection rate, rising from 958,052 cards collected in 2023, which represented 97.0 percent, to 1,028,929 cards in 2026, representing 97.1 percent of registered voters.

The collection exercise, originally scheduled to end on June 11, 2026, was extended to June 14, 2026, after consultations with stakeholders in Ado-Ekiti.

INEC disclosed that 14,406 applications were received for replacement of lost, damaged or defaced PVCs in line with Section 18(1) of the Electoral Act 2026. All replacement cards were successfully printed and most have been collected. The commission noted that the option of a downloadable copy of lost cards could not be implemented for this election due to incomplete technology infrastructure but will be available for the Osun State Governorship election in August 2026 and the 2027 general elections.

The commission expressed appreciation to traditional rulers, community leaders, civil society organisations, political parties, and the media for their support in mobilising citizens to collect their PVCs. It assured that all eligible applicants, including those who requested transfers or replacements, received their cards. A detailed breakdown of PVC collection by Local Government Area has been uploaded on the commission’s website and social media platforms.

INEC urged all registered voters who have collected their PVCs to turn out peacefully on election day and reaffirmed its commitment to conducting a free, fair, credible, and inclusive governorship election in Ekiti State.

MALAWI: Egypt Pledges Long-Term Support for Malawi's Food Security Drive

By Smile Hamilton

One of Malawi's key development partners, Egypt, has unveiled plans to strengthen the country's fight against climate-related shocks by supporting food security, drought-resilient farming and large-scale agricultural investment.

The commitment comes as Egypt has donated relief items, including milk, beans, macaroni and sugar, in response to the 2025 Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee (MVAC) Report, which projected that more than four million people would face hunger during the 2025/26 consumption year.

Speaking with media Egypt's Ambassador to Malawi, Rasha Hamdy, said her country's support extends beyond emergency food assistance.

"We want to help Malawi achieve lasting food security not only through donations but also by empowering farmers to withstand future climate shocks," said Hamdy.

She added that Egypt is interested in bringing Egyptian businesspeople and investors to Malawi to cultivate land and expand the country's food processing industry as part of efforts to boost agricultural production and investment.

Minister of Agriculture Roza Mbilizi welcomed the initiative, saying the longstanding relationship between Malawi and Egypt goes beyond humanitarian assistance. She noted that Egypt has previously supported Malawi through technical expertise provided to the former Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development.

Mbilizi further revealed that Malawi is planning a business mission to Egypt, while Egyptian investors have already expressed interest in investing in sugarcane production in the country, a move expected to strengthen agricultural cooperation and economic growth.

Witness Reveals Yahaya Bello's Payment To Kogi Revenue Officials In N110.4 Billion Fraud Trial

By Onoja Baba, Nigeria

A prosecution witness in the ongoing high-profile trial of former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Adoza Bello told a Federal Capital Territory High Court in Maitama, Abuja on Wednesday, that his company paid between 50 and 60 percent of commissions earned from tax consultancy services to officials of the Kogi State Internal Revenue Service (KSIRS).

The witness, who testified as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s 18th prosecution witness (PW18), made the disclosure before Justice Maryanne Anineh while being led in evidence by EFCC lead counsel Kemi Pinheiro, SAN.

Bello is being prosecuted alongside his nephew, Ali Bello, and two others, Umar Shuaibu Oricha and Abdulsalami Hudu, on a 16-count charge bordering on criminal breach of trust and money laundering to the tune of N110.4 billion.

The witness, whose company specialises in information technology, software development, tax automation and advisory services, told the court that his firm was engaged by the KSIRS for tax process automation, audits, and policy strategy. He stated that the company was initially entitled to 15 percent commission on tax collections above N350 million, which was later reviewed downward to five percent due to increased internally generated revenue and lower operational costs from automation.

He identified former KSIRS Chairman Senator Yakubu Oseni as one of the key officials he dealt with. The witness disclosed that 50 to 60 percent of the commissions received by his company were paid to certain stakeholders through bank transfers and cash, on the directives of Senator Oseni via his Personal Assistant, Yusuf Abdulmumuni, and later through the Personal Assistant of Oseni’s successor, Aliyu Nda Salami.

The witness confirmed that payments were not part of the formal consultancy agreement. He identified several bank statements as exhibits, including accounts of Bespoke Business Solution in Zenith Bank and Sterling Bank, and revealed that one Jami’u Salihu, nominated by Senator Oseni, was a signatory to the project account and made several large withdrawals.

During proceedings, the court also heard from the 19th prosecution witness (PW19), Jamilu Abdullahi, a Bureau de Change operator and owner of companies including E-Traders International Limited, who testified about his dealings with entities linked to the case.

Earlier, the cross-examination of PW17, Shenu Bello Bala, an estate agent and commodity trader who is a friend and business partner of Ali Bello, was concluded. He clarified that he is not related to the Bello family and is not from Kogi State.

The trial, which has been closely watched due to Bello’s influence as a major political figure in Nigeria’s North Central region, has seen multiple witnesses testify about alleged fund diversions during his administration between 2016 and 2022.

Justice Anineh adjourned the matter to October 14, 15, 27 and 28, 2026, for continuation of trial.

The case is part of the EFCC’s broader investigation into alleged massive corruption in Kogi State during Bello’s eight-year tenure, with previous witnesses revealing details of suspicious multi-billion naira transactions involving government accounts and private entities. Bello has consistently denied all allegations, describing the prosecution as politically motivated.

JUST IN: UK Court Acquits Diezani of Six Bribery Charges

Ameenat Hamzat, Lagos, Nigeria

Former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, was on Wednesday acquitted of all six bribery charges brought against her by a United Kingdom court following a 12-week trial at the Southwark Crown Court in London.

The 65-year-old former minister, who served in the administration of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan between 2010 and 2015, was found not guilty after a jury deliberated for 46 hours. The charges comprised five counts of accepting bribes and one count of conspiracy to commit bribery.

UK prosecutors had alleged that Alison-Madueke received gifts and financial benefits from oil and gas industry figures seeking preferential treatment in the award of contracts in Nigeria during her tenure as petroleum minister.

According to the prosecution, the alleged benefits included £100,000 in cash, more than £2 million spent on luxury shopping at Harrods, £4.6 million used for property refurbishments, private jet travel, chauffeur-driven vehicles and payments for household staff at luxury homes in London and Buckinghamshire.

However, testifying in her defence during the trial, Alison-Madueke denied requesting or accepting bribes, insisting that she neither abused her office nor solicited favours from industry players. Her lawyers argued that the allegations were politically motivated and that investigators had mischaracterised payments and benefits linked to her.

The trial, presided over by Justice Justine Thornton, examined allegations dating between 2011 and 2015. Had she been convicted under UK anti-bribery laws, the former minister faced a maximum sentence of 10 years imprisonment and an unlimited fine.

Alison-Madueke was tried alongside oil executive Olatimbo Ayinde, 54, and her brother, Doye Agama, 69. Ayinde faced two bribery-related charges, while Agama was accused of conspiracy to commit bribery over alleged payments connected to his church.

Both men denied the allegations and were also acquitted by the jury, bringing the high-profile corruption trial to a close.

NIGERIA: Deji Adeyanju Hails VeryDarkMan As Most Influential Voice Of This Generation

By Onoja Baba, Nigeria

Prominent human rights lawyer and activist Deji Adeyanju has declared that no one in this generation matches the influence of social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM).

In a post on Wednesday, Adeyanju, who also serves as VDM’s lawyer, wrote, “No one has VDM’s influence in this generation. No one comes close. Super proud of you darki. We can now confidently leave the stage for the real courageous ones.”

The statement comes amid growing recognition of VDM’s rising profile as one of Nigeria’s most fearless and outspoken digital activists.

Born on April 8, 1994, in Abuja, with roots in Edo State, VeryDarkMan gained prominence through his no-holds-barred commentary on social justice, government accountability, celebrity misconduct, and public sector corruption. His large and highly engaged following on platforms like Instagram and TikTok has enabled him to mobilise public opinion and demand action on issues ranging from police brutality to human rights abuses.

Adeyanju’s comments signal a symbolic passing of the baton, acknowledging that younger, bold voices like VDM are now driving the conversation on national issues.

The veteran activist, known for his own high-profile advocacy and legal battles, has frequently represented VDM in court, including cases involving the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and other authorities.

Political observers interpret the post as both a commendation of VDM’s impact and a reflection of Adeyanju’s willingness to step back and allow a new generation of activists to take centre stage in the fight for good governance and social justice in Nigeria.

VeryDarkMan has built a reputation for confronting powerful individuals and institutions, often using his platform to advocate for the voiceless. His bold style has earned him both widespread admiration among Nigerian youth and occasional backlash from critics and authorities.

NIGERIA: Atiku Welcomes Court Of Appeal Stay On ADC Deregistration Judgment, Warns Against Judicial Manipulation

By Onoja Baba, Nigeria

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has welcomed the Court of Appeal’s decision to stay the ex*****on of the Federal High Court judgment ordering the deregistration of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and four other political parties.

In a statement on Tuesday, Atiku described the development as significant, especially since the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) itself initiated the application for the stay of ex*****on.

The Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice Peter Lifu, had on Monday, ordered INEC to deregister the ADC, Accord Party (A), Action Alliance (AA), Action Peoples Party (APP), and Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) for allegedly failing to meet the constitutional requirement of securing at least 25 per cent of votes in a sufficient number of states during the 2023 general elections.

The ruling came just days after the ADC announced former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi as the running mate to Atiku for the 2027 presidential election, raising suspicions of political motives behind the judgment.

The Court of Appeal, Abuja Division, swiftly intervened on Tuesday, lambasting Justice Lifu for what it described as “judicial rascality” and disregard for its earlier order staying proceedings in the matter. A three-member panel led by Justice A.B. Mohammed granted the stay of ex*****on, preserving the status of the affected parties pending the determination of the appeal.

Atiku noted that the disturbing pattern of judicial contradictions and politically charged rulings has placed the judiciary under intense public scrutiny. He quoted ADC National Chairman, Senator David Mark, who observed that “the judiciary itself is now on trial.”

“Any attempt to undermine Nigeria’s hard-won democracy through judicial manipulation is a grave danger to the Republic,” Atiku warned.

“If our democracy suffers further injury, history will demand accountability from those entrusted with dispensing justice,” he said.

The former Vice President urged the judiciary to redeem its image by upholding the Constitution, the rule of law, and the interests of the Nigerian people.

The ADC had earlier rejected the Federal High Court judgment, describing it as a threat to democracy and vowing to challenge it vigorously.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, expressed confidence that higher courts would overturn the ruling.

Political observers view the swift appellate intervention as a temporary reprieve for the opposition party, which had positioned itself as a major platform for Atiku and other prominent figures ahead of the 2027 polls.

However, the legal battles surrounding the party’s status are expected to continue in the coming weeks.
