A pretty amazing transformation in just 10 days!

We caught our New Rochelle swarm on 8/30 and found this beautiful virgin queen in the cluster that same day. On 9/4, we found her again, still slender, with no eggs in the hive.

Today, 9/9, she’s noticeably longer and fuller…and officially laying eggs!

From virgin swarm queen to successfully mated queen, very cool to witness the entire process!

A rare glimpse at honey bee colony behavior: worker bees are cannibalizing a developing queen pupa. Colonies may remove and consume developing brood when it is damaged, unhealthy, or no longer needed. The nutrients are recycled back into the colony, an efficient, if slightly gruesome, part of life inside the hive.

Nice swarm catch in Yonkers today! Easily one of the largest swarms I’ve collected, a beautiful mass of bees about 6 feet up.

Got 95%+ of them, found the queen, and brought the whole crew home.

A pretty exciting addition to the apiary!
