Last month the voting public was invited to attend a meeting regarding annexing the outlying county into Island Park City. Even though they only invited voters, there were other members of the community that did attend. The discussion was to determine if it was feasible to accomplish this, and what benefits may be available, as evidenced by the flyers being handed out.
It was determined, that annexation may be a problem, since it requires 60% of the property owners to agree to it. Note, all property owners get a say with this avenue.
Instead, the best way to succeed, was to proceed with forming a new city, and then merging the two cities into one, Island Park and whatever the new city is to be named. It requires 400 signatures of registered voters within the new "city limits", then it is put on the ballot for registered voters to decide. This again limits those that are able to have a voice in the decision to become part of Island Park City.
It is my understanding that they are currently attempting to collect those 400 signatures to proceed. We should ask ourselves and others what this may provide for us.
1. What it won't do is keep any of our county tax dollars on the hill, all of that still goes to Fremont County.
2. What it will do is add an additional layer of tax that will go to the city, no matter how small they start, taxes never go down or go away, they always go up.
3. It will add an additional layer of government to contend with.
4. What will the additional layer of tax actually add for you? They do intend to continue to use the county resources we already have in place.
5. And while I understand this is a legal avenue to take, are they not using the standard annexation process because they know that 60% of property owners didn't buy where they are to be in a city?
6. Do your own research, understand what additional tax implications this may have for each or you, and what benefits it may gain you, before you add your name to the petition, or vote for it!
