Last month the voting public was invited to attend a meeting regarding annexing the outlying county into Island Park City. Even though they only invited voters, there were other members of the community that did attend. The discussion was to determine if it was feasible to accomplish this, and what benefits may be available, as evidenced by the flyers being handed out.

It was determined, that annexation may be a problem, since it requires 60% of the property owners to agree to it. Note, all property owners get a say with this avenue.

Instead, the best way to succeed, was to proceed with forming a new city, and then merging the two cities into one, Island Park and whatever the new city is to be named. It requires 400 signatures of registered voters within the new "city limits", then it is put on the ballot for registered voters to decide. This again limits those that are able to have a voice in the decision to become part of Island Park City.

It is my understanding that they are currently attempting to collect those 400 signatures to proceed. We should ask ourselves and others what this may provide for us.

1. What it won't do is keep any of our county tax dollars on the hill, all of that still goes to Fremont County.

2. What it will do is add an additional layer of tax that will go to the city, no matter how small they start, taxes never go down or go away, they always go up.

3. It will add an additional layer of government to contend with.

4. What will the additional layer of tax actually add for you? They do intend to continue to use the county resources we already have in place.

5. And while I understand this is a legal avenue to take, are they not using the standard annexation process because they know that 60% of property owners didn't buy where they are to be in a city?

6. Do your own research, understand what additional tax implications this may have for each or you, and what benefits it may gain you, before you add your name to the petition, or vote for it!

Letter written on behalf of those being persecuted and copied for publication here:

Date: September 7, 2025

The Honorable Raul Labrador
Attorney General of Idaho
[email protected]

Subject: Request for Immediate Investigation into Alleged Politically Motivated Voter Persecution in Island Park, Idaho

Dear Attorney General Labrador,
I write to formally express grave concern regarding recent reports of politically motivated actions directed against duly registered voters in Island Park, Idaho. These actions appear to undermine the rights guaranteed under state law and threaten the integrity of our democratic process.

Background and Legal Framework
Multiple accounts suggest that individuals who have satisfied the requirements for voter registration under Idaho Code § 34-405 (residency requirements) and § 34-408 (procedures for challenges) are nevertheless being subjected to investigation and punitive measures. These statutes are intended to protect lawful participation in elections; any departure from their provisions erodes public trust in the electoral system.

Summary of Allegations
Reports indicate that lawfully registered voters have been:
Detained without proper notice,
Interviewed absent Miranda protections, and
Forced to incur substantial financial costs in defending themselves against legal action.
Such measures appear inconsistent with due process and impose an undue burden on citizens exercising their constitutional right to vote.

Source of Challenges and Political Targeting
It is further alleged that a political organization has submitted select voters for investigation based primarily on perceived political affiliation rather than evidence of residency violations. If substantiated, such conduct raises serious concerns regarding impartial enforcement of Idaho’s residency statutes and the potential misuse of authority for partisan ends.

Consequences for Democratic Participation
The cumulative effect of these actions is a chilling impact on voter participation, fostering fear among residents who may worry about retaliation or prosecution simply for exercising their civic duty. This not only infringes upon the rights of individual Idahoans but also diminishes public confidence in the fairness and legitimacy of elections.

Formal Request for Action
In light of these concerns, I respectfully request that your office undertake a thorough and impartial investigation into these incidents in Island Park. It is imperative that Idaho Code §§ 34-405 and 34-408 be strictly enforced, that voter rights be safeguarded, and that any individuals or organizations found to have acted improperly be held accountable. Prompt action is essential to restoring public trust and ensuring the integrity of Idaho’s democratic process.
I appreciate your immediate attention to this matter. Should you require additional information, I remain available to provide further details or documentation. I look forward to your timely response and to the assurance that meaningful steps will be taken to address these serious concerns.

Respectfully,

What is happening in Island Park is a Political persecution! What would happen if you felt like the side you opposed in an election had the right to turn your name in as a challenged voter, and then instead of following state law and giving you notice to provide evidence within 20 days, the registrar simply turned your name over to the FBI for investigation.

Would you ever feel safe voting again? Would you always wonder if someone was going to turn your life upside down because you exercised your rights? Idaho law states you have to be in the voting district 30 days prior to the vote. In that 30 days, would you remember to change everything that might tie you to another community? Would you remember to move your home owners exemption for another home if you didn't sell it? How about time to change your drivers license? What if you moved to Idaho for the summer, in time to be there 30 days before the vote, then decided you hated the slow season when it rolled around, and moved again? What if they could use that scenario against you?

A number of our fellow community members are being persecuted in this exact manner. They legitimately registered to vote because they believed they met the criteria to do so. They presented everything the Registrar required of them, and only one was questioned further, but provided the additional documentation. Not a single soul registered with the thought they were doing so illegally.

They are not even being handled like human beings. Some have been hand cuffed and shackled, others have been lied too about the circumstances and then arrested in public places rather than being told they could turn themselves in. There were folks interviewed without being told they were going to be arrested or read their Miranda rights. The authorities showed up without arrest warrants or search warrants and used their positions to intimidate our friends and families. All of them are facing massive attorney bills and a fight for their lives, literally.

It is an outrage that the opposing party could present a list of names because they were disappointed about the outcome of a vote that would not even have affected their own income or properties, but would have affected the properties and income of every voter they turned in. Will you be voting in the next election knowing that our county government may respond like this if they didn't like your view points?

Think long and hard about how this may affect our community long term. Then stand up, fight for what is right, and guarantee our constitutional rights remain intact!!

What an outrage for Fremont County to spend so much tax payer money to prosecute a handful of Island Park residents over the Auditorium District vote that half of Island Park clearly didn't want!

The community should stand in support of those being persecuted by the select few that began the district. Show up for their first hearing date on the 17th at 1 pm!
