Its been a long time coming and we're far from done yet, but it was a huge win last night for Tompkins County when a local microbead ban was unanimously passed by the legislature!!! We're so ecstatic to share this news with you and cant express our gratitude for our ambassadors enough. These kids from age 13 to 15 made this is a reality, not us. They are the champions in this fight. As we paddle on towards Albany, we're calling on our New York State neighbors to take notice and introduce bans in their counties, and as well we're calling on the state senate, which has failed two years in a row to pass this ban, to take the initiative and show Big Plastic we mean business. Come on , let's !!

Throwback to one of the first photos ever taken for Plastic Tides. An oldie, but a goody. The beauty of the Finger Lakes is truly embodied by its sunsets as they reflect off the water, but did you know thousands of toxic microbeads lie just below the surface? A single bottle of facewash can hold 330,000 microbeads and their small size allows them to pass unaffected through wastewater treatment facilities directly into our waterways. Let's put a stop to this insanity. Call or email your local legislators today and tell them to in your county. We've got momentum across the state of New York with Erie County leading the charge. Now Albany County, Cattaraugus County, and Chautauqua County are considering the same ban. We're pushing to in Tompkins County, which would bring the count up to 5. For two years, lobbyists have thwarted attempts to ban microbeads on the state level, but the massive coalition of environmental orgs from across the nation that have supported the ban arent going to just lie down and give up. has already lost this battle they just don't know it yet. Sometimes you have to think small to get big results and thats just whats happening in right now. So show your support, post a photo of your old microbead products that your throwing away, or a photo of the the microbead-free products you use now. Or just post whatever you want! Just make sure to add the hashtag and tag your friends. Let's keep trending across social media and drive this change forward in a big way.

We launched for our 240 mile journey on November 9th from Ithaca, NY with hopes to reach Albany via the Erie Canal. Just days into the expedition a winter storm warning became the infamous “Polar Vortex” that dumped punishing snow on the Buffalo area and sent temperatures below freezing in all 50 states. Despite being undergeared for the intense cold, and struggling through a few gnarly situations, we kept our spirits high until our trip was cut short by impassable ice after 180 miles.
