The Ithaca Voice is a not-for-profit 501(c)3 news organization. The Ithaca Voice was founded in response to a crisis in local journalism. Steep declines in revenue have caused significant cuts to the number of reporters and editors at existing media companies in Tompkins County and nationwide, hurting the quality and availability of important civic and political information in Ithaca. Additionally, The Voice has become the online home for all things Ithaca, including dining, local personalities and other stories divorced from some of the conventions of a daily newspaper. In order to fund these efforts, The Voice pioneers new methods of generating revenue with online-only news through innovative partnerships with local businesses, display and video advertisements, and fundraising efforts. At the same time, The Voice plans to incorporate and build on the proven successes of a growing number of non-profit news sites across the country. These include best practices for expanding local audience through social media and effective Search Engine Optimization.
