The Valley Voice comes out tonight!

The government shutdown is over. Holiday travel is saved and Christmas music has taken over the radio! ‘Tis the season to be jolly. This weekend marks the start of the holiday shopping season with the Three Rivers Holiday Bazaar taking place at their Memorial Building from 9pm -4pm.

Candidates are lining up their endorsements and campaigns to run for office in 2026. Sheriff Mike Boudreaux has hinted at a future campaign for the California State Senate and Kyle Kirkland, a dark horse for congress last year, is throwing his hat back in the ring for 2026. Kirkland, seen as an independent business owner, just announced his candidacy for the 21st Congressional District.

After redistricting, the lay person might not know in what district they live. Useful to know is that Congress members do not have to live in the district in which they represent, which might be a good thing next election cycle since they might not know either!

In this week’s issue Dave Adalian writes about more legal trouble facing the Visalia Unified School District. A school football coach/Supervisor broke up a fight in front of Mount Whitney then got fired. He claims other staff members conducted themselves in the exact same way but were not even disciplined.

Much is happening during the holiday season in the arts and entertainment sector. Don’t miss a thing! Its all in this week's issue of the Valley Voice!

Congress narrowly clears a bill to end the nation’s longest shutdown.

The House on Wednesday gave final passage to a spending package to reopen the government, sending the legislation to President Trump’s desk and all but guaranteeing an end to the longest shutdown in the nation’s history.

The 222-to-209 vote came on Day 43 of the shutdown and days after eight senators in the Democratic caucus broke their own party’s blockade and joined Republicans in allowing the spending measure to move forward, prompting a bitter backlash in their ranks. It was the first time the House had held a vote in nearly two months, as it took an extended recess during the shutdown.

Representative Marie Gluesenkamp Perez of Washington, one of six Democrats who voted in support of the spending package to reopen the government, said in a statement that she voted for the bill because “the fight to stop runaway health insurance premiums won’t be won by holding hungry Americans hostage.”

“None of my friends who rely on SNAP would want to trade their dinner for an ambiguous D.C. beltway ‘messaging victory’ and I’m glad this ugly scene is in the rearview mirror,” Gluesenkamp Perez said, referring to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.
