Please welcome with us one of our newest members of East River Doula Collective, Sasha!

Sasha is a certified birth and postpartum doula, who is also an actor and has a BFA in Drama from NYU Tisch School of the Arts. She first felt called to be a doula after the birth of her first daughter when a complicated pregnancy and birth was made joyful and empowering by her own incredible birth doula. She believes that all birthing and postpartum people deserve non-judgmental, unwavering support, and treat each unique experience with compassion, respect, and humor (because laughing can help!).

You can find Sasha's professional bio on our website, but here are some fun facts you might not otherwise know about her:

Q: What is your favorite movie?
A: The correct answer is That Thing You Do.

Q: What do you find beautiful?
A: My daughters making each other laugh

Q: If you could buy any type of food (right now) what would you buy?
A: There is nothing better than a fresh artichoke straight from California. My grandparents lived in Santa Cruz and taught me how to cook the perfect artichoke from a very young age- important life lesson!

Q: What is something you wish you could be good at?
A: Journaling. I’ve accepted that it’s wonderful for lots of people but just not something that I can get into. (That said, in 8th grade my best friends and I shared this one communal journal and reading through that now is *chef’s kiss*)

Q: What's the best compliment you've ever received?
A: That I'm a good listener. Actually, that's tied with my daughter telling me I looked beautiful recently when I was having a day where I didn't feel beautiful at all.

Q: What is your favorite dessert?
A: Brownies straight from the oven, a liiiiittle bit undercooked

When it’s your first time to interview a postpartum doula, you might have no idea about what kinds of things to ask to make sure you hire the best possible doula for you and your family.

Because it’s a popular question, we created a blog post to help you get started! Pick and choose or riff on these questions.

Also keep in mind open-ended questions are smart. And/or creative questions delight a lot of us as it can get old being asked the same questions all the time! You mostly want to get a sense of their personality/vibe to see if they feel intuitively like a good fit.
