It has been nearly a decade since the Department of Transportation was tasked with developing a study of pedestrianizing the winding streets of FiDi that are already brimming with pedestrians.

This administration can use this solemn 25th anniversary of 9/11 to recommit itself to the revitalization of downtown, and finally release the plan and put it into action, says area Council Member Christopher Marte. https://buff.ly/ZDpEJeO

Pedestrianizing FiDi, or making it a "Low-Traffic Neighborhood," would be a model for the world, says the area's Council member.

Sept. 11, 2001 is a date that lives forever in infamy. But yesterday — Sept. 10, 2026 — was another day that will, in its own small and very different way, be remembered for tragedy. https://buff.ly/BzQcNeh

There is a lot of sadness to go around. Plus the news.

A truck driver speeding off the Manhattan Bridge killed a pedestrian and injured two others on Thursday morning on Canal Street and Bowery, a notoriously deadly intersection where two people were killed last year and the city has delayed long-promised safety improvements.

The elderly victim is the 64th pedestrian killed this year in New York City, according to the Department of Transportation.

Last year, there were two crashes at this intersection on consecutive days — one fatal, and both involving motorists who drove into the intersection from the highway-like bridge.

For more than two decades, officials have studied fixes for Canal Street, where at least two dozen New Yorkers have been killed or seriously injured since 2022.

NYC DOT finally announced a plan to upgrade the area’s pedestrian and cycling infrastructure, but this safety plan excluded the portion of Canal east of Broadway as making these essential improvements is more politically challenging thanks to business owners who want to prioritize parking over pedestrian space.

Gov. Kathy Hochul's vision for the proposed IBX light-rail includes a hell of a lot more housing in Brooklyn and Queens.

"Our streets, generally, are designed solely to move as many cars as possible as quickly as possible. Children’s safety is more important. If kids can use the street safely, everyone can." https://buff.ly/SR2xfHh

Becoming a dad inspired Greenpointer Chris Roberti to push for street changes to make the area around his home and his kids' school safer.

Northern Boulevard is one of the five corridors that Mayor Mamdani and Governor Hochul have named to get bus rapid transit — advocates view this announcement as a chance to improve cyclist safety, too. https://buff.ly/OueZeBO

Queens leaders say a bike lane would improve safety on both the six-lane commercial roadway and the parallel Paseo Park.

"Many more middle-schoolers would bike if they had safe routes to school. And that can’t merely mean painted, car-filled bike lanes because if we want more tweens biking, we have to make the roadway safe for people who are still just learning to bike in the city." https://buff.ly/dykqLF3

Public school kids are heading back to school today. Here's a perspective on road safety from one of them.

Congestion has plagued Austin Street in Forest Hills for decades. If officials want to bring meaningful improvements to this vibrant commercial area of Queens, they’re probably going to have to think outside the box — especially when it comes to transit.

Worthwhile change is possible, but it will require the state-run MTA and city-run DOT to coordinate with one another.
