Today we are celebrating and wishing my brother and dear friend, “Smoke,” Smokey Robinson, one of the greatest songwriters and musical icons of all time, a Happy 81st Birthday!

We grew up together in Detroit and the Tempts were blessed to have worked so closely with the truly gifted Smokey Robinson. Our very first Billboard Hot 100 chart hit, “The Way You Do the Things You Do” was written by Smokey Robinson and Bobby Rogers. I still remember when Smokey asked us to come to the Motown Studios late one evening in 1964. When we got there, he passed out the lyrics, sat down at the piano and said, “Okay, here’s how it goes…” I’ll never forget reading “You got a smile so bright, you could have been a candle; I’m holding you so tight, you know you could have been a handle, the way you swept me off your feet, you know you could have been broom…” I was thinking, this is some hokey stuff! I never thought those lyrics would make sense but that’s the talent of the great Smokey Robinson. Only he could master such lyrical content. Also, the Tempts’ first million copy, #1 Billboard Hot 100 hit song, “My Girl,” was written by the legendary Smokey Robinson and Ronnie White. Among our other beloved and signature chart hits that he wrote for us were, “Since I Lost My Baby,” “Get Ready,” and “Don't Look Back.” A musical legend, Smokey’s distinguished legacy of chart hits for not only the Temptations, but many other Motown artists, epitomizes the golden era of Motown. Please join me in honoring and showing your love for my brother, Smokey Robinson. With love and warm wishes for a healthy and happy birthday, and many more in the years to come. — Dr. Otis Williams

#cicelytyson, an honoree, takes the mic and quotes #langstonhughes “Mother to Son”. The English major in me nearly exploded.

I have the tail end of that poem on video. The “life for me ain’t been no crystal stair” part. I should have recorded the whole thing, but I think I was in shock.

Fast-forward an hour, and @maxwell walks right up to the table in front of me and starts serenading #cicleytyson And then a room full of Black people sings a capella together, which is my favorite Black thing.

Great, great night. I need to send @iamsusanltaylor some more money to say “thanks”.’
