Todd Irish is getting back into drumming and pulling the old band back together, so he stopped in to the shop today to find a solid kit. He found it in this used TAMA Superstar Classic that’s reminiscent of the finish and look of his previous Superstars. A big thanks to Jeff Ceresnie of Metro Detroit for bringing in his custom glass glitter bass drum and having it cut down from an 18” depth to 14”. He built this kit years ago and while he loves the overall sound and look, he realized he much prefers the tone and response of a traditional depth bass drum.

After cutting the shell from the batter side, the edges were trued and reshaped, followed by layout and drilling the lug holes that were removed with the cut. All in time for him to take it out on some tour dates with his Motown band!

Brian Walden of Nevada recently shipped us his DW Collectors Drum Set to have the bearing edges leveled and reshaped. He purchased these drums new from a showroom in 2008 after being taken in by their good looks and reputation, but admitted the sound never really matched his expectations. He described tuning them as being somewhat difficult and said the drums were rather limited in their range (i.e. they had a “sweet spot”… that shouldn’t be the case).

After truing the edges, we modified the profile to employ a large outer roundover so the head and shell could work in concert with one another and create a warmer, fuller tone. This sort of edge also makes tuning a breeze, allowing you to tune across a much wider range of tensions, holds tension better, has improved response for the player, and prevents premature damage to your drumheads.
