A little Blazer History
Two men, one, a business man fresh out of prison, the other, a journalism major and recent Wayne State University graduate. Mr Charles Cade and Mr. Ben Wade. The former had served time at Southern Michigan prison for stealing his brother's car. While in prison, he worked on the prison newspaper. Making Jackson his part time home upon his release, Mr. Cade shared his dream of starting a Jackson Black Newspaper with young Ben Wade during a backyard conversation over a fence. The year was 1962. Understanding the need, determination manifested itself into action.
An excited and supportive Jackson community saw the first edition, Vol 1 No 1 rolled off the press March 16, 1963 at 15 cents per copy.
The Jackson mayor, Bernie Mageria, said The Jackson Blazer would not last 6 months.
The Blazer, at the time, only provided an income for one, and Ben Wade took his skills to work for The Toledo Blade.
In December of 1969 Mr. Cade was murdered (a case still unsloved) in his bachelor apartment located near Jackson's downtown area.
Ben Wade then left The Toledo Blade and took over The Blazer with his first issue memorializing his friend and business partner Charles Cade.
It is quite conceivable that the life of The Blazer was held strictly in Wade's decision to return to Jackson as publisher of this fledgling newspaper. That was 53 years ago. Thank you Ben Wade for your desire to control the narrative regarding Jackson's African American community.
On March 18, 2023, The Blazer celebrated 60 years of service at Jackson College and Ben Wade was on hand to speak about the early days.

Well,we came, we saw, we celebrated. I am so proud to be a member of The Jackson community. I'm proud and honored because of the ground work of my parents and the path they laid for us to follow.
I believe we are realizing that we can accomplish more together than we can apart, regardless of our differences.
There are so many people I want to thank for just having an impact on my life.
Last night at Jackson College was unforgettable. Mother Irma Trice, Mother Odie Trice, Farris Coppage, Mary Sanders, Willis Pryor..... GIANTS

Jackson College women's basketball bow in tournament 74-65 to Grand Rapids
The Jackson College Lady Jets saw their season come to a close on Thursday night losing to the Grand Rapids Community College Raiders 74-65.

The Jets led early in the first period 10-5 but went scoreless and saw Grand Rapids take a 13-10 lead after one quarter of play. The second period Kaycee Shannon hit back to back 3's and the Jets were on top 24-20. Grand Rapids then reeled off 14 straight taking a 35-26 lead at the break, which proved to be the difference in the game, as both team played even in the second half.

Congratulations to the 22-23 lady Jets and Coach Brown who posted a winning streak of 18 consecutive games and finished the season 23-4.

Jets Clinch Conference, defeat Mott Community College 61-59

Despite a January 66-57 lost to Jackson College, Mott Community College put up a gallant fight, Thursday night, to prevent the Jackson College Jets from claiming sole possession as champions of the MCCAA East Conference, but in the end, the Jets came out on top.

Mott held the lead for much of the contest, leading by as many as 6 early in the game, but the Jets grabbed a brief 5 point second quarter lead, however, the stubborn Mott Bears would not go away and scored 6 straight to take a 26-25 halftime lead.

The second half neither team could pull away, with both leading by as many as 3. The Jets experience and preparation was the difference down the stretch, and certainly in the game's final seconds. With the score at tied 59, a Jet's steal and Tyra Ford's layup gave Jackson a two point margin with 10 seconds remaining. The Jet's defense and composure forced Mott into a desperation shot that missed badly. ending the game.
Jackson, originally scheduled to face Schoolcraft today has been canceled.

" It's huge for our sophomores to have co-champs of the conference last year and now champs this year", said Coach Heather Brown. "It's great for our program to have back to back conference plaques . and I'm so happy for the girls to win with all they have been through mentally this past week."

Jets back in action, hand Macomb County Community College 79-57 loss

The Jackson College women's basketball team were back in action, after a week of postponements due to inclement weather and power outages. However, the postponements were minor in comparison to the off court issues many of the young ladies had to face due to housing issues brought on by the power outages. "I could not be more proud of how our girls have played through the adversity that they have dealt with since last Wednesday night with not being able to stay in dorms." said Coach Heather Brown.
The Jets face the most important week of the season playing 3 games in the next 4 days, beginning with Mott CC on Thursday. Jackson College, 22-2, can clinch the MCCAA East conference where they are 11-1, with a win over Mott. They are scheduled to play Schoolcraft on Friday, and then for the State Championship on Sunday.

Jackson College women's basketball team defeat Henry Ford College 72-53.

A solid team effort saw the Jackson College lady Jets claim their 21st win of the season with a convincing 19pt win over a feisty Henry Ford team on Saturday February 18, 2023 at Henry Ford College. The Jets shared the ball and capitalized on fast break opportunities and had three players in double figures, Kaycee Shannon and Jada Patton had 16pts, followed by Morgan Morris, who added 11. Patton controlled the boards with a game high 14. Trinity Brown grabbed 7 rebounds in 13 minutes.

Jackson have three regular season games remaining against tough opponents, Mott CC and Schoolcraft next week at home and Macomb CC on the road. Coach Brown was pleased with the overall effort and team production, but hopes to minimize the turnovers, as they had 21 in the game. To somewhat offset the turnovers, the Jets had 8 steals.

Jackson College women's basketball suffer first loss since November 12, 2022

St. Clair Community College came to Vic Cuiss Fieldhouse on Wednesday February 15 and snapped Jackson College's 18 game winning with a 73-69 upset win. The Jets defeated St. Clair earlier on January 21, 2023 at St. Clair CC 78-66.

Since their emotional win knocking off 6 ranked Schoolcraft Community College on February 1, 2023, the Jackson College lady Jets, despite winning, have not been playing their best team basketball. A couple players have stepped up at crucial times to enable a win, but team play, in terms of their potential, has left a lot to be desired. The Jets are definitely a solid basketball team, with a 20-2 record as proof. However, it does not mean they have the luxury of playing less than their potential with expectations of winning, especially against formidable competition. When the Jets bring it at each position, they are like a finely tuned machine. Against St. Clair they were out of rhythm from the onset and trailed the entire game, except for the final 35 seconds where they knotted the score at 69 . A testament to their talent, despite a less than par performance, the Jets had an opportunity to win, or take the final shot, but threw the inbound pass away. Foul shots and a basket gave St. Clair the win in the closing seconds.

The Jets still stand alone at the top of the conference at 9-1, but may slip a spot or two in the national rankings.
They are back in action away against Henry Ford on Saturday February 18.
A loss, prior to tournament play, can sometimes re-invigorate a talented team and remind them they have to do more than lace up their shoes, they must bring it!!

Jackson College Defeat Wayne County Community College 78-64

In a game that wasn't nearly as close as the score might indicate, the Jackson College Women's Basketball Team claimed their 20th win of season against one loss, running their win streak to 18.

The Jets were all business from the tipoff as Kaycee Shannon immediately got Jackson on the scoreboard launching a 3 pt. field goal. WCCC got as close as 7 in the first half, but in each case the Jets responded with a basket of their own, in fact, the Jets scored at will. Coach Brown cleared her entire bench early in the contest experimenting with different combinations. Maya Pierce came off the bench to score double figures for the second straight game. it was a balanced scoring attack for Jackson with Nakiya Sigman leading the way with 20, followed by Kaycee Shannon with 15, Morgan Morris was steady at both ends of the court and added 11, Jada Patton with 10. The (9-0) league leading Jets face St. Clair County Community College at home on Wednesday February 15.

Morgan Morris and Maya Pierce lead Jackson College Women's Basketball to comeback win over Oakland Community College 62-59.

Oakland Community College came to Vic Cuiss Fieldhouse on Wednesday night with intentions of snapping the Jets 18 game winning streak and handing them their second loss of the 2022-23 season. For 37 minutes of the 40 minute contest Oakland's plan looked possible.
The Jets trailed by as many as 12 and by 10 at the half 33-22. "I Loved that the girls battled back for the win", said Jackson College coach Heather Brown. We started off shooting only 27% to OCC 48% in the first half. Talked about at halftime just finishing shots and stepping up on D. Maya played her best game of the year and was huge for us in the 2nd half! We have pushed her a bit to get more aggressive and yesterday I was very happy how she played. We needed her especially with Tyra Ford being out to ankle sprain from last Saturdays game.
The team knows that teams will be after us now so we need to continue to improve and add to our game. Pierce hit a 3 with Jets trailing by 9 and added 4 crucial free throws down the stretch that kept Jackson in the game. Morgan Morris hit two free throws at the 3 minute mark of the 4th quarter giving the Jets a 58-57 lead. Both Pierce and Morris contributed 15. Patton and Shannon added 10

Jackson College Women's basketball Streak still alive at 17, defeating Macomb Community College 54-48

There are no good losses in sports(maybe in elementary school), so the Jackson College Lady Jets decided to win ugly. Coming off of Wednesday's high energy win where the ladies defeated the sixth ranked Schoolcraft Ocelots, "we were flat today" said Coach Heather Brown, "this was our worst display of basketball of the year" said Brown at halftime to her players.
The Jet's strength is balance and versatility, not to mention unselfish team play. today Brown called on Nakiya Sigman, who came off the bench to score 15 points, including a buzzer be**er ending the first half, and another 3-pt buzzer be**er ending the third period. The Jets fought and scrapped and went inside to Jada Patton time and time again. Patton led the way with 20 points and 6 rebounds. Macomb was no pushover, entering the contest with a 14-4 record. The Jets look to regroup as they are back in action on Wednesday Feb 8 against Oakland Community College.

Jackson College Women's basketball team, ranked 19th nationally, dominate previously unbeaten Schoolcraft Community College 76-68 in conference play.

In a highly anticipated contest between conference unbeatens, both 5-0, The Jackson College Lady Jets brought their A game to Livonia, Michigan and led from start to finish in a commanding 8 point victory over #6 ranked Schoolcraft Community College. "I'm tremendously proud of our team" said 7th year Jackson College coach Heather Brown. "I'm proud of the way we competed and stepped up."

Tyra Ford set the tone for the Jets with a 3-pt basket seconds into the game. Ford didn't stop there, hitting three first quarter 3-point shots propelling the Jets to an early 12-2 advantage, a lead they would not relinquish. Ford was unstoppable leading the scoring attack with 31 on 6-11 from the 3pt arc and 9-11 from the charity stripe. The Jets led 36-25 at the intermission and a suffocating third quarter defense and Ford's torrid shooting saw their lead swell to 52-30 before the Schoolcraft Ocelots realized what hit them. Schoolcraft, displaying an undefeated mentality, fought back to draw as close as 7 before a Ford 3 point basket, along with free throws by Ford and Morgan Morris sealed the deal. Kaycee Shannon was solid for the Jets, deflecting passes and harassing on the defensive end. Shannon finished with 10 points, 6 rebounds and 1 steal. Jada Patton contributed 13 points and 5 boards but her inside presence stood tall. Riley Kubiak added 9 points, but the night belong to Ford

Jackson College Women's Basketball Sneak By Mott Community College 66-57

The Jackson College Women's Basketball team might have been caught looking ahead to Wednesday's highly anticipated contest against undefeated Schoolcraft Community College while trying to get past Mott Community College on Saturday January 28. The Jets appeared slightly lethargic but took advantage of their strengths-balance and depth. It was guard Tyra Ford's early aggressiveness and Jada Patton's muscle that willed the 16-1 Jets past the 8-11 Mott Bears. Jackson's 36-25 halftime lead ballooned to14, but the die hard Bears outscored the Jets 19-16 in the final period. The Jets never trailed, but clearly didn't showcase their best performance. Jada Patton was the scoring and rebound leader with 22 and 15, followed by Kaycee Shannon with 13 and 10. Shannon saw her season 3pt basket streak snapped going 0-3. Morgan Morris and Tyra Ford both chipped in with 11pts.
The Jets now prepare to travel to Schoolcraft College(14-0) on Wednesday Feb 1, 2023. Both teams are undefeated (5-0) in conference play

Jackson Vikings Boys Basketball Earn Hard Fought Win at Adrian 71-62

From the onset, the Vikings knew that had to reach back and simply play basketball. The officiating, early, was lopsided. Adrian was in the double bonus early in the second quarter, with the Vikings committing 10 fouls to Adrian's 4. Still, Jackson overcame a 16-8 first quarter deficit to take a 28-27 lead at the break. Coach Milton Barnes gave his squad the "ignore the refs and play basketball pep talk and Jackson took full control in the third period scoring 27 point and mounting a lead by as many as 16 , 55-39. It got kind interesting in the final period as Adrian narrowed the gap to 7 with 2: 50 to play. Baskets by Terrell White and Tyler Selby slammed the doored and Jackson claimed a 71-62 victory. White led the scoring attack with 23

Win costly, as Jackson College defeat Wayne County Community College 81-57, but lose Kaycee Shannon for at least two weeks to broken nose.
The Jackson College Lady Jets improved their record to 13-1, but a third quarter injury sidelined Sophomore Kaycee Shannon for more than likely, two weeks minimum. The Jets dominated WCCC from the onset leading by by as many as 20 in the first half, settling for a 40-25 advantage at the break.

Wayne County Community College narrowed the lead to 9 midway in the third quarter, after Shannon was injured, but the Jets regrouped and stepped on the gas in the fourth quarter to seal the deal.

The Jets have showed their resiliency during this injury plagued season with the next man-up mentality.

Coach Brown feels confident with whatever 5 players are on the court, but Shannon has been the fuel that ignites the engine and their play will be interesting with Shannon sidelined for two weeks.
Jada Patton and Morgan Morris led the Jets with 19 each.
