Trailing at halftime 33,-31, the Jets took the lead immediately in the second on a 3pt basket by freshman Morgan Morris. The Jets fought hard, rebounded and played solid defense and built up a second half lead by as many as 12 points. Muskegon, then, went on a 17-4 run to gain a 1 point advantage 61-60 with 1:53 to play. Four free throws in the final minute help Muskegon capture the win. Jackson Women win; LCC men win

While MSU vs U of M basketball was postponed in Ann Arbor, The Jackson College Jets and Lansing Community College Stars enjoyed an afternoon of conference basketball. Heather Brown's lady Jets dominated the Stars from beginning to the final horn 65-29. The Jets, being hit hard by COVID 19, was without their big presence in the paint, in the form of Jada Patton, but welcomed minutes from Kaycee Shannon.
The Men's game between Jackson College and Lansing Community College was far more competitive, with the Stars edging the Jets 87-80. Hall-of-fame Coach Mike Ingram saw his team take a 51-42 halftime lead, and stretched it to 18 around the 9 minute mark in the second half. However, the Jets refused to lay down and baskets by Brent Miles and Alex Daniels propelled the Jets to a 73-71 lead with 5:58 to go. It was then that the Jackson connection playing for the Stars, Drew Lowder and Tyshan Kelley went to work scoring 10 of the team's final 16 points.

Pastor Hines, Lily Missionary Baptist Church & The City of Jackson embody the spirit of giving, as motorist line up to receive over $67,000 in gifts.

Pastor James L. Hines fulfilled his vision of giving on his birthday, as over 300 residents in their vehicles passed thru several stations at Lily Missionary Baptist Church on Saturday, December 18, 2021, to receive gifts ranging from from frozen turkeys, to detergent, to a delicious hot meal to an envelope containing either $30, $60 or $100 in cash. "It is better to give than receive", said Pastor James L. Hines, quoting Acts 20:35. "Things always turn out good when we follow what God said." "I was somewhat challenged on this day because of the inclement weather. However, I remembered what my late father Pastor Joseph Hines said when I woke up to freezing rain.. "God called you to be faithful not successful."

Good Things Going honor Parkside's John Brandon as Teacher of the Month

Good things going, a campaign started by The Walton Agency and headed by Stuart Kail, has named John Brandon as the Teacher of the Month.

"This award means I am making a valuable impact on the community of Jackson.. Through JPS, I am able to influence generations of young people to invest in their education, their character, and our community.", said Brandon. "However, for me, my wife Brenda, is the entire reason I can dedicate myself to teaching. She is my peace, my motivation and my encouragement. I could do nothing without her and my entire family by my side."

"I'm glad John Brandon was recognized and he is receiving this award because he is very deserving", said Parkside Principal Jeremy Patterson. "He has great relationships with students, staff and families. He is a product of Jackson Public Schools and he continues to invest in the students he serves, and beyond."

JHS Senior Olando Trader signs to play football at University of Iowa.

Star Jackson High School defensive back Olando Trader has signed his national letter of intent to play football at the University of Iowa.
"Olando is a very talented kid who has great speed and great strength for an athlete playing wide receiver/defensive back", said Jackson High School football Coach Scott Farley. "He's a super hard worker, great weight room guy who has really matured over his time in high school."

"Next year I will work my butt off to get some playing time at Iowa", said an excited Olando. "I don't look at my future teammates at my position as competition, but rather what can I learn from each one of them."

Olando credits Coach Farley with much of his maturity, saying, "He's not really concerned with wins and losses, as he is with us becoming productive men."

"We are super excited", said Olando's mom Kristi Trader. "We didn't know where he was going at first. We looked at schools in the MAC and SEC but playing in The Big Ten is a dream come true for Olando. So, as his mom, we are super excited and on a scale of 1-10, it's an 11"

Jackson Vikings prepare for 2021 Abbreviated Season.
For the past couple weeks, the Jackson High School basketball team, as well as others schools, have been limited to conditioning and drills. Monday, February 8 was the first day contact was allowed, giving the hungry for action, young inexperienced 2021 Vikings an opportunity to impress Coach Milton Barnes. "We are young with a lot of potential", said Coach Barnes. "We have speed and we have depth." See the next issue of The Blazer for the season outlook.

The Blazer is saddened to learn Benny Poole has passed away today.

A Jackson Legend has Transitioned: The Great Benny Poole
1929-2020.

Benny Poole, a great saxophonist whose career as a musician began in the 1940's.

"Jackson has lost a historical figure and a trailblazer unparalleled. He bridged the gap between the white and black community like no one has done before or after. He would connect with the Mayor, Pat Patrick , Les Stanford, Roger Penske and children at the King Center all in the same day, all with the same level of attention. There will never be another Benny Poole, we must keep his memory alive." -(Pastor Lee Hampton, as well as Vice President of Jackson College)

Benny Poole will be missed through and through by the Jackson Community.

What's your thoughts?
In reference to the stimulus check. An unnamed person told me that the Friend of the Court applied their entire stimulus check( $1200) to the balance of their child support. They were already paying monthly and were up to date on their payments. I thought this was unfair. What's your thoughts?

Why was Kim Curtis fired from the Jackson School of the Arts, after so many years of successfully providing school for the underprivileged. Their response was to go in a "more progressive direction." But since they couldn't explain what that meant to the Hurst foundation, the foundation asked for it's $150 thousand dollar donation back. They gave the money back and fired Ms Curtis. No one on the board it talking.

Thanks for the support at Gus Macker , The Jackson Blazer! It was a great weekend in Downtown Jackson.
Please please help, we need the contact info of Steve Anderson of Shoreline Improvements based in Jackson. After installing construction sand (Cancerous properties & choking hazards) for our children’s play beach and dangerous patio (on 2 inches of foundation, which flooded after a week) he isn’t responding to our emails/calls (517) 796-0645/301 Brown Street. After he lied about his work but eventually admitted fault, he still owes us thousands of dollars while posting/bragging pictures of himself gambling and getting tattooes on Facebook. We had to scale down our Christmas with our kids due to his work and don’t know what to do. Please help.
