Ron Etheridge Music "Spirit Rider"
I wrote this in honor of my dear friend, Joe Lacey, who passed away. He was the president and one of the founding members of the Jackson Ms. motorcycle club, the Spirit Riders. I met Joe and the gang when I was playing with the local band, Acoustic Crossroads. One of Joe’s closest friends and fellow Spirit Rider, Reggie Puckett, took a liking to one of my original songs, “Blonde and the Blue.” It became a favorite among the guys. Tragically, Reggie was killed in a boating accident on the reservoir.
Joe asked if I would play “Blonde and the Blue” at his funeral. He said it was Reggie’s favorite song. I honored his request, and we all felt closer after that. I, along with Acoustic Crossroads, became the Spirit Riders’ official band. From that point on, the song took on a new spirit of its own.
It’s amazing to see the love and closeness of the club as they huddle together when we perform it. It was almost as if you could feel Reggie’s “Spirit.”
Joe Lacey passed away a few years later to an aggressive form of cancer. It killed all of us who had the honor and privilege of knowing him. Now, the response to that song is a tearful sing-along and a reminder of the two of them and what they meant to us. It’s a beautiful thing.
The Spirit Riders have made a difference in my life and the community. After Reggie passed, Joe and the boys started the Reggie Puckett Foundation, a charity that raises money for a child in need every year. I wrote this song in honor of Joe Lacey.
Joe, for lack of a better word, was a mentor to me. He very generously funded my solo record, “A Madman’s Masterpiece,” and made sure I had the right equipment over the years.
He gave me so much more than that. He was a friend to me through some of my darkest times. He encouraged me and was always there for me when I was in need. I loved him like a brother.
One of those guys who felt like I’d known him my whole life after meeting him. I initially wrote this song titled “Rider Joe,” but in honor of Joe, Reggie, and the boys, it’s now simply called “SPIRIT RIDER.” I put together this amateur music video with pictures and clips of my time with Joe and the Riders. This one’s for you, Joe.
It’s now available for purchase on all major streaming platforms.
Saturday, 31 is the annual Reggie Puckett fundraiser at Shuckers Oyster bar in Ridgeland Ms. Starting around noon tomorrow Acoustic Crossroads and I will be performing. Come see the love of this Motorcycle club that inspired my new single.
