Final Winner's Spotlight--

Mark McCumber won the 1995 Andersen Consulting World Match Play Tournament (United States Section) at Blackwolf Run’s River Course in Kohler, Wisconsin, a par‑72, 6,991‑yard layout.

Here is how it all played out...

Semifinal — U.S. Section Regional
Opponent: Corey Pavin

McCumber came back from being 4 down after six holes (and still 3 down with five to play) to win the match in dramatic fashion on the 18th hole, finishing 1‑up. Pavin hit his tee shot into the water on the par‑4 18th, leading to a double bogey 6, while McCumber secured bogey 5 to edge him out.

Final — U.S. Section Regional
Opponent: Loren Roberts

In the U.S. Section final, McCumber defeated Roberts to claim the regional title. These victories earned him the U.S. Section championship and qualified him for the international finals in Scottsdale later that year where he finished 3rd place.

Back in 1994, Mark McCumber won the tournament defeating Fuzzy Zoeller in a sudden-death playoff with a total of 274 (-10) at the Olympic Club in San Francisco, CA. This was his 10th & Final Win on the PGA Tour.

This 1998 Mark McCumber/Mike Beebe design in the western Nashville suburb of Dickson isn’t terribly long from the tips at 6,858 yards and par-72, but it’s a sufficiently strong, compelling test to host the 2023 Tennessee State Open. Hills, rock outcroppings, streams, and strategically placed bunkers lend serious variety and visual interest, but what will bring home birdies—or doubles—are the reachable par-fives, three of which range from 515–520 yards. Riskiest of all is the 517-yard 17th, with water left and bunkers directly in front of and behind the green.

Wednesday Winners Spotlight:

The 1989 World Cup of Golf was held at Real Club de Golf Las Brisas in Marbella, Spain, from November 16–19, 1989.

🇺🇸 Team USA:
• Paul Azinger
• Mark McCumber

Result:
• The United States team of Azinger and McCumber won the team competition, finishing 8 strokes ahead of the second-place team from Spain (José María Cañizares and José María Olazábal).
• Mark McCumber also won the individual title, becoming the World Cup individual champion.

Wednesday Course Design Spotlight:

The IMG Academy Golf Club in Bradenton, Florida, was originally designed by Mark McCumber, with a subsequent redesign by Gene Bates. The course is an 18-hole, par-72 layout, measuring 6,855 yards from the longest tees offers an enjoyable test of golf with pine trees, water and native Florida foliage in play throughout the course.
It features a driving range with six practice tees and is known for its challenging play. The course is open to the public and members alike.

Golf’s Travel Boom and the Hidden Loyalty Engine

The past three years have seen record or near-record numbers of U.S. golfers traveling to play the game.

Whether buddy trips, couples’ weekends, short getaways, or destination golf experiences, more than 12 million Americans have traveled to play golf each year since 2022, up from an estimated 8.2 million in 2018. This appetite not only highlights golf’s popularity, but mirrors a broader societal trend toward experiential pursuits. And it’s being driven especially by the allure of aspirational courses and bucket-list destinations.

Over the past five years, more than 40% of new golf course openings have had resort ties or can be considered “destination” locations where golf is the prime focus. The former category includes recent debuts at high profile resorts like Bandon Dunes in Oregon (Shorty’s), Streamsong in Florida (The Chain), Sand Valley in Wisconsin (Sedge Valley), and Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina (No. 10), while the latter encompasses private or public getaway destinations such as Broomsedge, Old Barnwell and The Tree Farm in South Carolina, or GrayBull and Landmand in Nebraska.

While many of the more prominent golf travel hotspots are highlighted in the below graphic, more than 1,250 golf facilities in the U.S. overall have a resort component. And thousands more are sojourn-worthy destinations that are helping fuel what is the second-largest contributor to the U.S. golf economy: travel & tourism.
