Wednesday Course Design Spotlight:

The IMG Academy Golf Club in Bradenton, Florida, was originally designed by Mark McCumber, with a subsequent redesign by Gene Bates. The course is an 18-hole, par-72 layout, measuring 6,855 yards from the longest tees offers an enjoyable test of golf with pine trees, water and native Florida foliage in play throughout the course.
It features a driving range with six practice tees and is known for its challenging play. The course is open to the public and members alike.

Golf’s Travel Boom and the Hidden Loyalty Engine

The past three years have seen record or near-record numbers of U.S. golfers traveling to play the game.

Whether buddy trips, couples’ weekends, short getaways, or destination golf experiences, more than 12 million Americans have traveled to play golf each year since 2022, up from an estimated 8.2 million in 2018. This appetite not only highlights golf’s popularity, but mirrors a broader societal trend toward experiential pursuits. And it’s being driven especially by the allure of aspirational courses and bucket-list destinations.

Over the past five years, more than 40% of new golf course openings have had resort ties or can be considered “destination” locations where golf is the prime focus. The former category includes recent debuts at high profile resorts like Bandon Dunes in Oregon (Shorty’s), Streamsong in Florida (The Chain), Sand Valley in Wisconsin (Sedge Valley), and Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina (No. 10), while the latter encompasses private or public getaway destinations such as Broomsedge, Old Barnwell and The Tree Farm in South Carolina, or GrayBull and Landmand in Nebraska.

While many of the more prominent golf travel hotspots are highlighted in the below graphic, more than 1,250 golf facilities in the U.S. overall have a resort component. And thousands more are sojourn-worthy destinations that are helping fuel what is the second-largest contributor to the U.S. golf economy: travel & tourism.

Heading into the Final Round of The Open Championship, let’s take a look back at Mark McCumber’s best finishes in golf’s oldest major.

In 1996, Mark McCumber finished runner-up to Tom Lehman at Royal Lytham & St Annes, the same venue where Tiger Woods claimed low amateur honors.

His best finish at St Andrews came in 1984, at the 113th Open Championship, held July 19–22 on the Old Course in Fife, Scotland.
McCumber tied for 8th place with rounds of 74-67-72-70 for a total of 283.
Seve Ballesteros was the champion, finishing at 276.

This year, The Open is being played July 17–20, 2025, at The Dunluce Course at Royal Portrush Golf Club, a world-renowned links course in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. Known for its dramatic coastal views of the Atlantic Ocean and the nearby ruins of Dunluce Castle, the course was originally designed by Harry C**t and extensively renovated before hosting The Open in 2019.

Female Golfers Fuel Cultural Shift-

Thursday NGF Golf Update:

Golf has a new face, and it’s younger, more diverse, and increasingly female.

Women and girls have quietly become the driving force behind golf’s post-pandemic resurgence, accounting for 60% of growth in on-course participation since 2019. This surge has pushed the female golfer count to a record 7.9 million – shattering the previous high of 7.1 million set in 2006, before the Great Recession disproportionately devastated women’s participation in the sport (female participation declined 28% from 2007 to 2011, compared to a 9% drop among male golfers).

The turnaround has been striking. A decade and a half ago, women represented just 1 in 5 “green grass” golfers. Today, they account for 28%. They’re also now a third of all golf participants when factoring off-course engagement like Topgolf, simulators and driving ranges.

What makes the growth particularly significant is its youthful energy. More than half of net participation gains among women have come from those under 30, and just under half of all women playing traditional golf are now under 35 – compared to roughly one in three male golfers. The average female on-course golfer is 4 years younger than her male counterpart. This generational shift is bringing new energy and expectations throughout the industry.

McCumberGolf is overseeing all grassing and growing in process. We will also be running all operations at the club once it’s back open in the Fall of 2025.
