It saddens us to report that former U.S. Congresswoman Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick has passed away at 80.

A trailblazer in public service, Kilpatrick represented Michigan’s 13th and 15th districts from 1997 to 2011, following nearly two decades in the state legislature. A proud member of the Congressional Black Caucus and the Appropriations Committee, she was a fierce advocate for Detroit—fighting to secure federal resources and opportunities for the communities she served.

Known for her unwavering commitment to equity, education, and empowerment, Kilpatrick paved the way for countless Black women in politics. She was also the mother of former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick.

“In honor of Congresswoman Kilpatrick, we encourage everyone to reflect on their own role in making our community a better place and to continue the courageous work she championed for all,” her family shared in a statement.
