September is Su***de Awareness Month. Years ago, I volunteered with a Crisis Clinic, including the Su***de Hotline, where I received training on how to respond when someone was in crisis over the phone.

If someone had a plan and access to a weapon, we encouraged them to put it down and create distance from it. We would also ask about anything they had to live for—a loved one, a pet, or even something as simple as a plant.

If someone was in immediate danger, such as having overdosed, we were instructed to call 911, preferably from another phone so we could remain on the line with them.

Most importantly, listen, stay calm, and remind them that they are not alone
