🎬🎬 The Little Witch (Die kleine Hexe, 2018) is a charming German fantasy film directed by Mike Schaerer, based on the beloved children’s book by Otfried Preußler. A magical and heartwarming tale, the film blends whimsy, humor, and life lessons, appealing to both young audiences and adults alike.
The story follows a 127-year-old witch (played by Karoline Herfurth) who lives in the forest with her talking raven, Abraxas. Despite her age, she is considered young by witch standards and longs to be accepted into the circle of elder witches and allowed to dance at the grand Walpurgis Night celebration. However, when she sneaks in uninvited, she is caught and punished: she must learn all 7,892 spells in the witches' book within a year to prove she is a “good” witch.
Determined to succeed, the Little Witch studies hard and begins practicing magic—not for mischief, but to help others. She befriends local children, cures illnesses, and uses her powers to do good deeds. This draws the ire of the older, meaner witches, especially the strict head witch Rumpumpel, who believes a “good witch” should be wicked and selfish.
As the year ends, the Little Witch returns to prove herself, but instead challenges the corrupt values of the witches' society. In a bold and clever move, she turns their own magic against them, showing that true power lies in kindness, not cruelty.
Filled with colorful visuals, playful special effects, and a strong moral message, The Little Witch is a tale about self-belief, integrity, and breaking away from outdated traditions. Karoline Herfurth brings warmth and charm to the title role, making the character instantly lovable. Uplifting and imaginative, the film celebrates the magic of doing what’s right—even when others don’t believe in you.
