We have set up a new page for community events and to keep you updated on our Holiday and Summer Guides. As you know, the Summer Guide was canceled due to most events being scrubbed due to COVID. But we will have an all digital Holiday Guide. It will be a bit smaller because so many events will not be held. But there will be virtual events and re-imagined events to celebrate the holidays.

Operation Medicine Drop is Saturday
JPD Officers Help with Drug Collection

Officers with Jacksonville Police Department’s Community Services Division will participate in the Operation Medicine Drop this Saturday, October 24th.

Operation Medicine Drop is a program to fight drug abuse, protect people and pets against accidental ingestions and to help keep our area waterways safe and clean. The program allows citizens to bring their unused, unwanted or expired medications to the drop off locations on Saturday, September 24th from 10:00 to 2:00 PM. This will provide convenient, safe and anonymous disposal of prescription medications.

Participating drop off locations within the City are:
· Walmart - 2025 N Marine Blvd
· Walgreens - 1600 Gum Branch Rd
· Walgreens - 359 Western Blvd Walgreens
· Onslow Memorial Hospital - 317 Western Blvd

“From a law enforcement point of view, keeping unused medications creates a dangerous opportunity for illicit drug use” stated JPD Community Officer Christopher Padrick, an organizer of the event. Jacksonville Police has partnered with the Onslow County Partnership for Children, Safe Kids Onslow, Onslow Memorial Hospital and other agencies in for this event. “This has been a very successful partnership and program over the last ten years.” said Padrick.

Not able to make the event? Remember that Jacksonville Police maintains a permanent Operation Medicine Drop Box in the lobby of the police department. For more information, contact JPD at 910-455-4000.

The annual observance to mark the 37th anniversary of the October 23, 1983 Beirut Bomb Blast will be held at the Beirut Memorial on Friday, October 23, 2020 at 10:30AM. The observance will honor the fallen service members and survivors who served in Lebanon from 1958 to 1984 and in Grenada.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the observance will be virtual, and closed to the public as the area around the Beirut Memorial will be secured at the time of the live broadcast of the event.

The observance is an annual event organized by the City of Jacksonville Beirut Memorial Advisory Board in cooperation with the City, Marine Corps Installations East, and Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune.

The Commandant of the Marine Corps, General David H. Berger, will deliver the annual Beirut Memorial Service Address. The 29th Commandant, General Al Gray will also deliver remarks. He was the commander of the Second Marine Division when the Beirut bombing occurred. He has been a frequent speaker on the national circuit about the importance of the incident and is revered by the Beirut Gold Star families and survivors of the blast.

Mayor Sammy Phillips is the sixth Mayor to repeat the words “We will not forget” to the families of those who have names on the wall. It has become the solemn duty of the Jacksonville Mayor to renew the pledge at each observance. Together, the Mayor and the command of Camp Lejeune appoint members to Beirut Memorial Advisory Board whose duty it is to organize and perform the annual observance.

The event will be broadcast live on the Jacksonville-Onslow Government channel, on www.G10TV.org, on social media and through the Marine Corps Enterprise Network (MCEN) at the following web address on the day of the ceremony: URL: https://www.dvidshub.net/webcast/24897

The organizers regret the public will not be able to attend. Should weather events require, the event will take place inside the Jacksonville City Hall.
