The story of Gideon, found in Judges 6–8, is a powerful testimony of how God can take someone who feels weak, afraid, and unqualified, and use them for extraordinary victory.
Israel’s Situation
The Israelites had turned away from God, and as a result, they were oppressed by the Midianites for seven years. The Midianites were so ruthless that the Israelites hid in caves and mountains, afraid of their enemy. Every time Israel planted crops, the Midianites and their allies would swoop in and destroy the land. The people cried out to God for help.
God Calls Gideon
Gideon was threshing wheat in a winepress to hide food from the Midianites when the Angel of the Lord appeared to him. The angel greeted him as a “mighty warrior,” even though Gideon saw himself as the weakest in his family and doubted God’s presence. This shows us that God often sees more in us than we see in ourselves.
