What an honor to see the Lunar Quilt project featured on CBS News!

Last year, quilters and students from across the country came together to create blocks inspired by our journey back to the moon. Every stitch reflects creativity, passion, and the power of collaboration — just like space exploration itself.

Thank you to everyone who submitted a block and helped bring this vision to life! These quilts are a beautiful reminder of what we can accomplish when we unite toward a shared goal.

The Lunar Quilts are on display now until April 20 at The Kennedy Center Earth to Space Festival.

When he was in his early 20s, chemical engineer Frank Capra was working odd jobs near San Francisco, such as pruning fruit trees and selling books door to door. Then he saw a 1922 newspaper ad: Workers were needed at a gymnasium to help adapt a Rudyard Kipling poem into a silent short film. With confidence, Capra — who had grown up in Los Angeles but had no cinematic ties — told the production he was from Hollywood, nabbing his first directorial gig, en route to helming several classic films. By the following decade’s end, he had won three Best Director Oscars, for "It Happened One Night" (1934), "Mr. Deeds Goes to Town" (1936), and "You Can't Take It With You" (1938). And 1946 saw the release of perhaps his most enduring and beloved film, "It's a Wonderful Life." Capra urged people to follow their instincts, regardless of their past experience. Curiosities should be pursued, for every half-formed idea has the potential to become a work of art.

A German-born artist, Kurt Schwitters worked across a wide array of genres and media, though he is most widely known for his collages. In the wake of World War I, he collected garbage from the streets to use as material, creating heartfelt and often sentimental works from the most unlikely of components. His work from this period took the remains of devastating conflict and transformed them into art. For him, the creation process was spiritual, a way to step free of life’s chaos, and bring pieces of the world together instead of ripping them apart.

First rising to prominence in the 1960s as a member of the Black Arts Movement, award-winning poet Nikki Giovanni established herself as a leading proponent of racial and gender equality; her early works "Black Feeling, Black Talk" and "Black Judgement" are among the most important volumes of modern African American poetry. This quote appears in the 2016 book "In the Company of Women," a literary collection of empowering wisdom and advice to which Giovanni contributed. In it, the poet explains that she seldom dwells on self-doubt, since "mistakes are a fact of life." Her words are a reminder that when questions arise, so, eventually, do answers. It's integral to face adversity head on, because only then can we learn from it.

Pianist and harpsichordist Wanda Landowska’s dedication to her craft played a significant role in reviving the obsolete harpsichord in the 20th century. Born in Poland in 1879, Landowska was a young prodigy, taking up the piano at age 4. She graduated from the Warsaw Conservatory of Music at just 14, and by her mid-20s was performing for Russian royalty. By 1941, after escaping the N**i occupation of Europe, Landowska had made her way to the United States, where she extensively toured, recorded, wrote, and taught. In 1949, she settled in Lakeville, Connecticut; there, Landowska spent hours every day, often late into the night, playing — not practicing, in her famous words — her beloved harpsichord. Her Lakeville home became known as the Landowska Center, where students from all over the world study her scores and even perform on the artist’s personal instruments.

Rising to fame as an influential voice of the Dadaist movement, ceramicist Beatrice Wood's avant-garde approach to crafting lustrous pottery pushed artistic boundaries. Throughout her 105-year-long life, Wood fought to bring the absurd and unfamiliar into the mainstream, though she was also well aware that straying from orthodoxy would come with challenges. With this quote, she expresses that mistakes are a part of life, and rather than getting discouraged by setbacks, we should anticipate them. We can shift our perspective to see “mistakes” as learning experiences that teach us, shape our path, and ultimately mold us into who we are.
