On #ThrowbackThursday, we look back at Tracers which began performances at Steppenwolf Theater in Chicago in January 1984 to wide acclaim and praise, particularly by Vietnam War veterans. Drawing inspiration from his connection to the Vietnam War experience by family members, our very own Gary Sinise was adamant in bringing Tracers, conceived by John DiFusco and co-written by fellow Vietnam veterans, to Chicago. Once granted the rights to the play, Gary was intent on having the actors convey to audiences the struggles and hardships faced by returning veterans from Vietnam. Describing through their words and actions those wounds both seen and unseen, the horrors of battle and loss. Gary and the cast of Tracers went so far as to go through their version of Boot Camp over a six-day period of physical training and team-building activities.

Speaking with Vietnam veterans at the North Chicago VA, the cast invested themselves into their subject to better understand the Vietnam War experience by those who were there. At the same time that Tracers debuted at Steppenwolf, so to did the tradition of inviting veterans from the local community to attend a free performance at Steppenwolf Theater called "Vets Night." A tradition that has continued for 35 years and is now sponsored by the Gary Sinise Foundation.

This beautiful photo, taken on May 31, 1945, in Okinawa, Japan, shows Lt Richard Jones of Los Angeles, California, feeding two Japanese children who were hiding in an abandoned tomb, 50 yards from the frontline. This true American hero survived the war. He passed away on March 23, 2004, at the age of 89.
We salute and honor his service. 🇺🇸❤️🙏

Today I learned that a roughneck in Oklahoma can make $80,000 in his first year on the job, working just six months. Some of the guys I talked to use that extra time to freelance in other trades. Plumbing, electric, HVAC…the need is there, and the opportunities are endless. It’s not a cakewalk – that’s for sure. The shifts are long, the work is physical, and while I was there, the temperature ranged from 29 degrees and blustery, to 85 and sweaty. But I don’t think the guys at Gore Nitrogen and Red Bluff Resources care. Honestly, I think they kinda like it…

Thank you gentlemen, for your hospitality.

PS. Work Ethic Scholarships now available at mikeroweWORKS/scholarship. We've got a million dollars up for grabs. Trade schools and training programs only.

From everyone at the Foundation, we want to wish a Happy Birthday to our very own, Gary Sinise! Each step in his journey from self to service has contributed to where the Foundation is today. His huge heart and relentless compassion are why we all work so hard to serve his mission to honor our nation's defenders, veterans, first-responders, their families, and those in need. He is truly an inspiration, and as he always reminds us, “While we can never do enough for our defenders and their loved ones, we can always do a little more.”

"We are the world's leading research and educational center of excellence on PTSD and traumatic stress.

PTSD is a mental health problem that some people develop after experiencing or witnessing a life-threatening event, like combat, a natural disaster, a car accident, or sexual assault. It's normal to have upsetting memories, feel on edge, or have trouble sleeping after this type of event. If symptoms last more than a few months, it may be PTSD. The good news is that there are effective treatments." Please follow the link below to follow The National Center for PTSD.

Their paths off the streets: LA veterans share their journeys to find homes

"Whether more or fewer veterans became homeless during the past two years, the Department of Veterans Affairs still doesn’t know. The federal government typically organizes a “point-in-time” count of the country’s homeless population every January. The count was canceled in 2021 because of the coronavirus pandemic, and it was delayed this year by several weeks."

While some veterans in Los Angeles have already been helped by the increased attention toward the crisis there, others are still waiting their turn for a permanent home. Four veterans at various stages in the path out of homelessness shared their accounts.
