Back in September, I attended the Gathering, an annual event organised by ALDHA-West to celebrate hiking and educate about some of the aspects hikers face on trail. Part of the program is the Triple Crown award ceremony, where the people who have finished thru-hikes of the Appalachian Trail, Continental Divide Trail, and Pacific Crest Trail are awarded a plaque, and their achievements are celebrated.

I was honoured to be part of it all. What a way to wrap up the Triple Crown. In 2020, the pandemic changed my plans. In 2021, I started making plans to take on the Triple Crown. In 2022, I completed the AT. 2023 saw me hike the PCT. I finished the trio on the CDT in 2024, and in 2025 I was acknowledged as a Triple Crowner. A multi-year, 8000-mile journey neatly wrapped up.

It was wonderful to be around so many amazing people, and to feel part of such a supportive group who have made the conservation and promotion of the US Scenic Trail Network their life's mission. Just like all the trails I've hiked, I went into it alone and came away with a lot of new friends and wonderful memories. I've always said the people who make up our community are what make thru-hiking special.

Thank you to all of the organisations who ensure that despite the political, economic, and ecological challenges, we have trails to hike on, to meet new friends, disconnect from the stresses of life, and live in the moment. Trails that lead us through the most beautiful parts of the USA, and push us to grow as we conquer their challenges. Each one is life-changing. Doing these three has changed me.

🥾 Alexander Marriott has just joined an elite group of hikers to complete the Triple Crown of Hiking – and he did it all fully vegan. 🌱

Over 12,000 km (8,000 miles) in just 14 months, Alexander hiked through some of the most remote and extreme terrains in North America. It involved hiking the 2200-mile Appalachian Trail, the 2655-mile Pacific Crest Trail, and the 3100-mile Continental Divide Trail. He faced lightning storms, avalanches, wild animals, and more – all while fuelling his body with plant-based meals.

“I did it all as a vegan and have documented the entire journey. In September, I will attend the Triple Crown award ceremony in Colorado,” Alexander told Great Vegan Athletes

Plant-based since 2003 and fully vegan since 2014, he says, “I made the change because I’ve always felt compassion for animals… I wanted to live a life that didn’t negatively impact the world around me.”

👏 Huge respect to Alexander for showing that being vegan is no barrier to endurance, adventure, or grit.

One year ago today, I started the third and final leg of my 3-year consecutive Triple Crown: The Continental Divide Trail. More akin to the Pacific Crest Trail than the Appalachian Trail, it felt like it would be a continuation of the previous year, but it quickly differentiated itself. The CDT gave me emotional highs and lows like no other trail. One thing that remained the same as the other two trails was the community. Other hikers were always supportive and friendly. Trail angels were generous and welcoming, and accommodation owners were proud to be part of the annual pilgrimage from border to border.

No one talks about the CDT. The trail doesn't get much press or inspire as much interest to those who haven't done it. But this trail is special. Maybe it's special because it's quiet. At one point, I spent nine consecutive days alone and didn't see a single other person for eight of them. Maybe it's special because there are no expectations. No one has written a famous book that inspired a movie. Maybe it's up to me to change that. Watch this space 😉

I think it's special because every trail is. It's not unique to the Triple Crown trails or CDT in particular. It's hiking in general. Being in nature, traversing the landscapes, detached from society, and in the moment, at the mercy of the elements, and with nowhere else to be other than "here." Wherever you go hiking, it's a truly special thing.

Two years ago, I set out on what became my favourite of the Triple Crown hikes; the Pacific Crest Trail. I met some amazing people who will be friends for life. I trekked some of the toughest terrain and conditions I have ever faced. I imagine if I ever hiked the PCT again, it could never be the same. It's not just that the snow was deeper than ever before, the weather was incredible, and the timing meant I could keep a continuous footpath. It's the people who made the experience so unique. I can't imagine meeting so many people that be such a big part of my life. I'm so grateful to know all of you who I'm still so close with. Thank you all for the wonderful memories.

27th March 2022 - OTD, I took the first steps of my Triple Crown journey. Starting off from Amicalola Falls State Park and finishing at Springer Mountain, it took all day to make 8.8 miles - a number of miles that, just a few weeks later, would only take me just a few hours to reaxh each day. It's funny how the trail beat me into shape so quickly.

The Appalachian Trail was a life changing experience. The landscapes I saw, the people I met, and the feeling of conquering something huge left me addicted. It changed me. I always loved hiking, but now, 8000 miles and three years later, I think about it all of the time. When I started this journey, I said I'd like to do the three big trails and then go on to a totally new type of challenge. Now I'm thinking about so many other trails that are on my wishlist, that to do them all would take a lifetime.

That's the magic of these strips of dirt that meander through nature. They teach you things and lead you places you never would have thought to go, show you unforgettable panoramas, and introduce you to a community that love being wild more than any person you've known before.

I love thru-hiking, and I love this community. OTD 2022, I found you all, and I had no idea those 8.8 miles (and over 600 stairs - IYKYK) would be so significant.

We got up when it was dark and cold to climb Mt. Taylor, so we could see the sunrise. The way up to the summit was cold, steep, and incredibly windy. I longed for my warm sleeping quilt as my fingers froze, and my body felt the chill of the biting wind. I sat on the mountainside, trying to stay out of the path of the gusts, and as the sun rose in front of us, I remember feeling all of the discomfort of the past few hours had been worth it.
I'm not a morning person, but sights like this are what these hikes are made for. Epic, mountain top sunrises are worth all the unpleasant hard work. These memories stay with you for life.

Where did you watch your most epic sunrise in 2024?

King Lizard 🦎

Throughout southern New Mexico, darting between the rocks and cacti, there were a plethora of grumpy looking reptiles. I loved getting their portraits and testing how close I could get with my camera before they would run away. A few trusted me to get very close indeed.

What were your favourite desert creatures?
