With 2023 complete and 2024 just starting, as I mentioned a few weeks ago, I will no longer be part of WNY News Now/First Defense Weather. As a result, this will be my final post for First Defense Weather. I want to again thank everyone for their support and viewership over the past few years. It has been an honor and a blessing that I never imagined possible. If you wish to continue to follow my weather you can follow my weather page Weather Forecaster Andrew Stevenson and WNY Stormchasers as I will still be active on those pages providing weather updates for the Southern Tier as needed. When storm season begins in the Spring, I will be helping the team at WNY Stormchasers with their severe weather chases and you may even see me riding along with them sometime! Thank you again everyone and I hope everyone has a happy 2024!

A cold front will drop across the area tonight with some light snow showers accompanying it. This may put down a dusting to less than an inch of snow across the higher hills through tomorrow. Cooler air settling in behind the front will return temperatures back to the 30's for Saturday. Weather Forecaster Andrew Stevenson

We had some occasional light rain showers today, but a stronger low pressure system will move across the region late tonight and through the day on Wednesday. This will bring an extended period of widespread soaking rain across the area. Rainfall totals through tomorrow night will be in the range of 0.75" to 1.25". Other than the rain, temperatures will remain above average in the 40's and lower 50's through the end of the week. Returning back to near normal (35) by the weekend. No records were broken today, but it was still a warm Christmas day across the region. We saw some lower 60's in Erie PA and Dunkirk NY. While here in Jamestown, we made it to 54. Personally, I prefer a little bit of snow to set the scene as long as it's not bitterly cold or a blizzard like last year. Weather Forecaster Andrew Stevenson

I had to pull this one out of the graphic archives. With most of the snow from last week mostly melted away and high temperatures in the 50's on Christmas, we can expect a green Christmas for 2023!

Special Weather Statement from the National Weather Service in Buffalo.

"Fog is expanding late this evening over portions of Western New
York. Expect visibilities to continue to lower into the overnight
hours. Locally dense fog is possible with visibilities less than
one half mile. If travelling into the overnight hours over
western New York, be prepared for locally reduced visibility. Be
sure to increase your following distance behind vehicles and to
use the low beam setting on headlights."

The Winter Solstice will arrive tonight at 10:27 PM. Today will be the shortest day of the year with just about 9 hours of daylight. The solstice is when the sun is the lowest across the Northern Hemisphere. The good news is that after today, we start to (slowly) gain daylight!

Mainly quiet (and snowless) weather will pretty much take us through the Holiday weekend and into Christmas day across the entire Northeast. With no additional snow and much warmer temperatures between now and Christmas, a "Green" Christmas is likely in store for Western New York. In fact, the NOAA CPC continues to favor well above average temperatures to close out the year.
