Jasper's Burns picks up 400th career win

Jasper head basketball coach Heath Burns reached a milestone in Tuesday night's home game over Cullman, picking up win No. 400.
In his 19-plus years, Burns has a career record of 400-165 with 13 seasons of 20-plus wins, eight area championships, four trips to the final four and a state championship at Cordova in 2017-18.
Now in his fourth year at Jasper, Burns has a record of 82-31, including a 16-4 mark so far this season. His high school coaching career started at Dora in 2007-08.

Jasper earns area sweep of Cullman at Carl Cannon Coliseum

Cullman had three tries at tying Jasper in the closing seconds Tuesday night.

The Vikings came up with a stop each time, earning a 43-40 statement win over third-ranked Cullman.

Cullman battled its way back from a double-digit deficit to tie the game with 1:58 left. On the ensuing possession, Jasper's Caden Steiner found Braylon Johnson open under the goal. Johnson made the shot and completed the 3-point lead for the 43-40 lead with 1:22 left.

From there, Jasper turned to its defense. Despite turning the ball over twice, the Vikings held the Bearcats in check. Cullman's final shot missed the mark with 3 seconds remaining. With the win, Jasper moved to 16-4 overall, 2-0 in Class 6A, Area 13. Cullman fell to 18-4, 1-1.

The Vikings never trailed in the game. They led 13-8 after the first quarter, 21-17 at the half and 36-28 after three quarters.

Jarrell Johnson led the team with 16 points, Keegan Keeton added 10 and Braylon Johnson had eight. For Cullman, Brooks Loftin had nine points and 14 rebounds while both Emory Bonds and Max Brooks put in eight.

Varsity Girls
Jasper 53, Cullman 37

Jasper scored the first 10 points and never looked back, beating Cullman 53-37 in their area game Tuesday. The Lady Vikings never trailed, leading 19-7 after the first quarter and 29-16 at the half.

Marianna Rigsby had 14 points in the opening half to lead the Jasper offense. Jasper pushed its lead to 45-25 after three quarters.

Rigsby finished with 16 points to lead Jasper, Taniya Windham had 12 and Sara Bonner put in nine. Jasper improved to 17-5, 2-0 with the win while Cullman falls to 16-5, 1-1.

Jasper sweeps Cullman for crucial area wins

Both Jasper teams moved tp 2-0 in Class 6A, Area 13 play with wins over Cullman at Carl Cannon Coliseum on Tuesday night.

Jasper girls won 53-37 while the Jasper boys took down No. 3 Cullman 43-40.

Oakman earned a pair of varsity wins over rival Cordova at home on Monday night.

The Lady Wildcats pulled away in the final quarter for the win while the boys took control early and had four players score in double figures on their way to victory.

Oakman 40, Cordova 30

Oakman's girls held Cordova in check in the fourth quarter, earning a 40-30 win.

The Lady Wildcats took a 28-26 lead in the final period. Oakman picked up the win at the free-throw line, knocking down nine shots. Journi Randle added a 3-pointer for the only basket of the quarter.

Oakman led throughout, taking a 9-5 advantage into the second quarter and a 19-18 lead at the half.

Randle led a balanced offensive attack with 10 points, Karissa Billups had nine while Annleigh Hagood, Sadee Busby and Kamryn Ward each added seven points. For Cordova, Mia Vance had 11 points and Chloe Kacharos put in eight.

Oakman 61, Cordova 33

Tyler Thomas got Oakman's offense off and running Monday night against Cordova.

Thomas, who finished with a double-double, had 12 points in the opening quarter and the Wildcats put the game away with a 9-0 spurt to start the second quarter on their way to a 61-33 win.

Four Oakman players scored in double figures, led by Thomas with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Hampton Hall added 13, Tanner Pate put in 12 and Barrett Panter had 10 points. TJ Rogers added 10 rebounds. Oakman led 13-6 after the first quarter and 36-11 at the half.

For Cordova, Copper Moehlman had nine points and Josh Harrison added eight.
