Today, I was driving on Highway 78 traveling east near the Argo Community. A 2016 Honda Civic passed me traveling a high rate of speed toward Dora/Sumiton. I began notifying dispatch. I caught up to the vehicle and gave the tag number to dispatch.

By this point, the vehicle was traveling in excess of 110 mph and was all over the wet roadway. I continued to radio the other responding units. We came into Sumiton near Lee’s Restaurants then began to encounter heavy traffic. Sumiton and Dora Units were staged at Horse Creek Blvd.

The roadway was blocked by the agencies and the vehicle was brought to a stop before any accidents or injuries could occur near the intersection of 78 and Horse Creek Blvd. Officers began approaching the vehicle giving commands for the female driver to exit the vehicle. As officers were approaching, she began reaching into the back seat. I was unable to see what she was doing at the time due to dark tinted windows. She was ordered to let me see her hands. She exited the vehicle and was cuffed behind the back without incident or injury. We later determined that she was hiding alcohol behind the passenger seat. She was arrested tor multiple offenses and taken to Dora City Jail.

She refused to give BAC samples. After the arrest took place, she began kicking and head butting the glass in the patrol vehicle. She also kicked an officer in the groin at the jail as she was getting out of the patrol unit.

The driver was identified as Mia Marie Perkins, 23, of Cordova, charged with Reckless Endangerment, Disorderly Conduct, Attempt to Elude, Assault 3rd, DUI.

Note that she was arrested back in March for DUI.

Note that all suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

At approximately 4:28 this morning, Jasper Fire was dispatched to a structure fire on 19th Street West. First-arriving personnel found very heavy smoke coming from the Walker County Public Defender's Office located at 375 19th Street West.

After an initial attempt at an interior attack presented signs for a potential flashover, crews transitioned to a defensive attack.

Soon after, in the interest of firefighter safety, a plan was developed to contain the fire to the business of origin. The fire wall between the Public Defender's office and the law firm next door was heavily protected with an aerial master stream, two pumper-mounted master streams, and several handlines. Positive-pressure ventilation was utilized to slow potential fire spread.

Thanks to some of the hardest-working firefighters and officers in the industry, this plan was executed perfectly and fire damage was contained to the Public Defender's Office. The neighboring law firm received heavy smoke damage and light water damage. Other businesses down the strip received moderate to light smoke damage.

At this time, the exterior brick walls of the Public Defender's Office do pose a risk of collapse. For this reason, a portion of 19th Street West and a portion of 4th Avenue have been baracaded off to both vehicle and pedestrian traffic. This is expected to last at least through Monday when the walls can safely be removed.

I would also like to express my heartfelt appreciation to a community that showed up and took care of the people that take care of them. I count it nothing short of a blessing to be able to serve such a selfless community. There was way too many people to mention that took the time out of their holiday weekend to show up, help out, and make sure that we had anything we needed. But you all know who you are and I do, too. From bringing water and Gatorade, coffee and biscuits, to providing us lunch and cold towels, opening up their spaces for us to sit down, cool off, and use the bathroom. Even the numerous texts and calls that I got throughout the day by folks checking on us and asking if we needed anything. Me and the guys can't thank you all enough.
