Walker County Sees 22.78 Percent Turnout; Akins wins Sheriff’s Race
JASPER — Unofficial results from the Walker County 2026 Primary Runoff Election show that voter turnout reached 22.78 percent Tuesday, with 9,798 ballots cast out of 43,020 registered voters.
According to election statistics released at 9 p.m., 46 of the county’s 47 precincts had reported, representing 97.87 percent of precincts counted.
Republican voters accounted for the overwhelming majority of ballots cast, with 9,573 votes, or 97.7 percent of the total. Democratic voters cast 225 ballots, representing 2.3 percent of all votes. No nonpartisan ballots were recorded, and two blank ballots were reported.
In the closely watched Republican runoff for Walker County Sheriff, Jason Akins defeated J.C. Poe Jr. with 62% of the votes. Akins received 5,899 votes, while Poe garnered 3,628 votes, or 38%.
Three overvotes and 43 undervotes were recorded in the sheriff’s contest.
Final results will be certified in the upcoming weeks.
