ed a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and sharing Appalachian history, culture and stories. The sad truth is that the people who know this history, who lived this history, are passing, on a daily basis….and many of their stories of old Appalachia are being forever lost. We think that is a tragedy. We believe that these people and their stories deserve respect, and have value…tremendous value. These stories should be kept alive because although the world is far different today….the information in these stories should never be lost. Our children and their children’s children need to know from whence they came. They need to know their authentic Appalachian heritage…and not the one that is so often frequently and foolishly stereotyped in pop culture. Appalachian Memory Keepers is dedicated to preserving and sharing these stories and memories thru modern media, including film, podcast, photographs, and online articles

A good sturdy barn is hard to beat! I love the water heater that has been cut in half and turned into a feed trough. We did that on the farm that I grew up on. If YOU grew up on a farm, what were some of the items you repurposed rather than just throw them away?

🕰️ A Pillar of Justice and Community: The Grayson County Courthouse 🕰️

In the heart of Independence, Virginia, where the mountains seem to cradle the town in timeless beauty, stands a symbol of resilience and heritage—the historic Grayson County Courthouse. Built in 1908, this stately red brick building has witnessed over a century of mountain life: the clatter of horse-drawn carriages, the hushed tension of courtroom trials, and the everyday rhythms of Appalachian folks going about their business.

With its iconic clock tower rising above the treetops, the courthouse has long been more than a place of law—it’s been a gathering ground, a backdrop for parades, festivals, and family photos. Generations have passed through its doors—some to marry, some to serve, and many just to pay a visit and feel the weight of history in its halls.

Even today, the courthouse anchors the town like an old friend—silent, dignified, and full of stories. If those walls could talk, they’d speak of justice and hardship, of laughter on the lawn, and of a mountain community that’s always stood together, come what may.

💬 Do you have a memory of the old courthouse in Independence? We'd love to hear your story. ⬇️

Ode to the Lone Oak in the Morning Fog
Ashe County, NC

O noble oak, round-crowned and proud,
You rise in hush beneath a foggy shroud.
The field lies still, the dawn is pale and wide,
Yet you stand firm, with time as your guide.

Your trunk—a pillar wrought in roughened grace,
Anchored deep in Earth’s green-breasted place.
No forest throng surrounds you here,
Yet solitude has made your glory clear.

The fog, like whispered prayers, clings low,
A silken veil where secrets flow.
Stillness reigns in every blade and stone,
But you—great sentinel—stand alone.

Above, the sun—a golden, watchful eye—
Breaks softly through the milkglass sky.
Its beams, like fingers, brush your arms,
And light your limbs with tender charms.

Each leaf aglow, a trembling flame,
No two alike, yet all the same.
Round-boughed and wise, you bear the years
Without regret, without fears.

O keeper of the meadow’s lore,
What winds have passed, what storms you bore!
And still you hold your perfect frame,
As if the Maker carved your name.

Though time may press and shadows fall,
This morning crowns you, best of all.
In mist and light, you calmly be—
A poem etched in bark—a tree.

Appalachian Memory Keepers was proud to attend and be a Sponsor last night of the Thomas Jefferson, and Martha Washington event held at the Martha Washington Inn in Abington, Virginia as part of the Virginia Highlands Festival. The event was put on by the Washington County Historical Society and it was fantastic! There is another performance tonight and if you live in the area, we could not recommend it more!
