Our Story

Gazette Newspapers and Great Lakes Printing owned by fifth-generation of Lampsons. For more than 140 years, Gazette Newspapers of Jefferson has served as Ashtabula County’s only family-owned publishing company. The Lampson family started the business in 1876. Today, ownership is in its fifth generation. Gazette Newspapers prides itself as the “publisher of your local community newspaper.” Gazette Newspapers are repeated winners at the Ohio Newspaper Association’s annual weekly newspaper competitions. In 2015, The Gazette was named “Newspaper of the Year.” Earlier this year, Gazette Newspapers received 14 awards in the most recent ONA competition, including awards for News Coverage, Best News Story, In-Depth Reporting, Best Local Feature, Best Sports Photo, Original Columns, design and advertising. Gazette Newspapers’ weekly award-winning publications include The Gazette, The Courier, The News, The Tribune and Gazette Newspapers’ only monthly publication, The Shores News. While each newspaper serves different communities, all have one thing in common: providing readers with local news. “We take pride in our length of service and the community news we bring to our readers,” Gazette Newspapers Publisher and President Bill Creed said. “We understand the importance of community news and what a good community newspaper means to a community.” Gazette Newspapers’ community commitment extends beyond its newspapers. “Community involvement is very important to us,” Creed said. “Our staff is very involved, and as an organization, we believe in supporting our communities. Very few events take place in our coverage areas in which Gazette Newspapers is not involved.” In addition to our print products, Gazette Newspapers also offers digital and electronic offerings on our website, gazettenews.com, and through our social media presence on Facebook. Gazette Newspapers’ commercial printing division, Great Lakes Printing, offers printing services that include full-color business cards, rack cards, multi-part forms, brochures, magazines, newsletters and complete newspapers, as well as wedding invitations and graduation announcements and marketing items such as banners, coffee mugs, magnets and pens. In March, Mark Chrzanowski joined the Great Lakes Printing as the commercial printing consultant. Chrzanowski brings three decades of experience in handling printing sales and promotional products to Great Lakes Printing, where he promises personalized customer service to companies from Erie, Pa., to Cleveland and everywhere in between. “Even with the internet, there is still that good-old, one-to-one face time that is reassuring to be present with business relationships,” he said. Great Lakes Printing Sales Representative Ed Mayeda says that Great Lakes Printing is unique in northeast Ohio because it does both web and sheet printing. “We like to think of ourselves as a one-stop shop,” he said. Web printing - which refers to a process, not the Internet – is applicable for newspapers, newsletters, news magazines, calendars and catalogs, directories, guides, mailers, programs and schedules. The web process is done on a roll and run at a faster speed on a lower grade of paper, so the cost is less than that the sheet-fed process. Sheet printing is used for business forms, business cards and brochures, calendars, catalogues, envelopes, newsletters, letterheads, wedding and graduation invitations, magnetic signs, post cards, flyers, special advertising, raffle tickets, rack cards, rubber stamps, black and white and color copies and more. While slower than web printing, sheet printing is of higher quality. Combining web and sheet printing divisions makes the company more efficient. “Maintaining stock and materials in a single location eliminates the duplication of departments and equipment. It enables our company personnel to work on multiple projects to speed work flow,” Creed said. “the more efficiently we operate, the better price, quality and service we may offer our customers.” Using a local printer such as Great Lakes guarantees face-to-face service. “One of our competitive edges is that we can provide local tech support to our customers,” Mayeda said. “The other issue is that ordering from the Internet extends delivery time because they are not locally located. Customers wait three to five days to receive the order, unless they pay extra for expedited delivery. Because we’re local, we provide 24-to- 48- hour turnaround time for web and about seven to 10 days for sheet products.” Gazette Newspapers and Great Lakes Printing are open 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. For a free consultation with a newspaper or commercial printing sales professional, call 440-576- 9125 x0, or e-mail Commercial Printing Customer Service Representative [email protected]. invitations.
