A Beautiful little Mountain Church with an amazing African-American history.
Standing quietly in the Cowee community of Macon County, Pleasant Hill AME Church holds more than a century of faith, perseverance, and African American history within its walls.
The congregation began in 1874, and the church building we see today was constructed in 1929. For generations, this sacred place served as a gathering point where families worshiped, celebrated, mourned, and strengthened the bonds of their community.
Restored in 2009, Pleasant Hill remains a beautiful reminder that even the smallest mountain churches can preserve some of our region’s most meaningful stories. The adjoining cemetery continues to keep watch over generations of families who helped shape this corner of Western North Carolina.
Places like Pleasant Hill deserve to be remembered—not simply as old buildings, but as monuments to the people whose faith and determination built communities across Appalachia.
