After an extended dry spell in B.C.’s Coast Range, a storm delivered, quickly followed
by arctic temperatures. “Knowing this might be the window to get the goods, we
layered up and headed into the Whistler alpine,” says Guy Fattal. “It ended up being
the coldest day of the year, but with perfect snow and incredible light, every minute
out there was worth it.” Austin Ross stays warm by getting shoulder deep in a fresh turn.

“We didn’t actually plan to shoot any ski action that day,” says Christoph Oberschneider. “When I saw the scenery with the trees casting long shadows, I knew I had to get a drone shot there with a skier.” Sandra Lahnsteiner-Wagner traces shadows outside Austria’s Gastein Ski Resort.

Marcus Caston has made a career of skiing for the camera, both stills and video. He is driven by the chance of capturing perfection—when light, conditions, framing and real, good skiing collide—the kind that lands in print, even if the pages available are harder to come by. In our Wisdom column in Issue 165, he shares insight on capturing the illusive perfect shot.
