The new Cross Country Skier depicts the soul of cross country: From weekend touring-center warriors, to those who get their kicks out the back door, to World Cup racer’s dinner, to metal-edged backcountry skiing, we cover it all. It inspires readers to travel to beautiful locations around the world and provide an insight into the personality and lives of some of our sport’s most interesting characters. We hope that reading each issue ignites your passion for skiing as much it has fueled ours.

For the Photo Annual, we solicited images from many of our favorite photographers, ones that celebrate huge vistas, the grit of athletic achievement and the rugged character of landscape. Veteran ski writer Peggy Shinn captures the vibe—both serious and zany—of the long-running college carnival circuit, while Alaska-based writer Lisa Maloney shares why now is a great time to see the aurora borealis on a far-north ski trip. Travel along with a group of skiers who retraced the route of a secret World War II mission to sabotage the Nazi’s nuclear bomb program in Norway, as well as to northern Vermont’s Jay Peak and the area near Mount Sutton in southern Quebec for great cross country trails. Read about a 50-year-old Nordic ski patrol in Colorado and how high-level athletes can better transition away from racing. Also inside: U.S. Nordic combined’s rejiggered future; the evolution of Nordic bindings; Colorado’s Ashcroft Ski Touring; a college president who is also a master’s biathlete; new and recommended apparel and accessories; and essays on discovering awe in the everyday, the benefits of kicker skins and achieving a lifelong long-distance racing dream.

The 2025 Gear Guide is our biggest one ever, with reviews of 60 skis, boots, poles and bindings. We also highlight three destinations in Canada that offer incomparable ski experiences: British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley, the historic Skoki Lodge near Banff and several Nordic trail systems in Quebec. Critically acclaimed cartoonist Alison Bechdel shares how cross country skiing inspires her work, former Cross Country Skier publisher and editor Ron Bergin celebrates World Cup racing in the U.S., and veteran ski journalist Peggy Shinn looks at the legacy of American biathlete Joanne Reid. Also included: skiing in eastern Idaho’s Teton Valley; the Canadian Ski Marathon’s long history; the future of Michigan’s ABR Nordic Center; how to improve your technique through double poling; searching for the best snow and slowing down to enjoy the view; accessories to keep you warm; and why one of writer Leath Tonino’s favorite ski companions is a snowshoe hare.

Reader Testimony

“There’s an old Nordic tradition in my family that involves the handing down of Cross Country Skier Magazines from father to son. It’s been a tradition over two decades strong. The most recent stack of ‘hand me downs’ included something entirely different, but still familiar—a redesigned evolution of your publication. It was alive with rich photography and intriguing stories about the people and places that make our sport great. The coverage and writing delivered on something I hadn’t realized I’d been looking for, a publication that digs deeper to uncover the true culture and nature of our sport. So, while I’m sad to see a family tradition die, I’m glad to say that after 25 years of bumming my Dad’s copies of Cross Country Skier I’m going to get my own subscription!”
