Coming up at noon today, Living Jazz. '

This week on "Living Jazz" we'll check in by phone with pianist Noah Barker, who is playing (with his father Thurman Barker) on Saturday, Nov. 16 at the Maple City Jazz Festival at the Cooperage Project in Honesdale, Pa. We'll also check out new releases by such musicians as trumpeter Jaimie Branch, twenty-something vocalist Veronica Swift, and veteran sax players Branford Marsalis and Joshua Redman.

The show will round out with a couple of tracks from vintage LPs I discovered yesterday in my basement featuring local jazz piano luminary Hal Galper playing with Chet Baker and Lee Konitz. Hal is opening the Maple City Festival on Friday. Nov. 15. I'm planning to air an interview with him in early November.

"Living Jazz" airs Fridays from noon to 2 p.m. on WJFF, 90.5 F.M., and streams online at wjffradio.org.

This week's "Living Jazz" show on WJFF will be heavy on piano jazz. Here are some of the reasons why:

Local jazz pianist/composer Kazzrie Jaxen has a birthday coming up...

Thelonious Monk would have been 102 today (he was born Oct. 10, 1917)...

The great jazz pianist Ahmad Jamal has a new album out...

Pianist/composers Kris Davis and Maria Chiara Argiro also have brand new albums out. They're among the most talented musicians on the scene. Both are resolutely uncommercial and deserve to be better known...

He wasn't a pianist, but the great rock and roll drummer Ginger Baker just died. A little known fact: Baker put out some excellent jazz recordings. We'll hear a track from one of them.

"Living Jazz" airs Fridays from noon to 2 pm on WJFF, 90.5 F.M. and streams online at wjffradio.org.

Please tune in.

Thanks.
