!! Notice from the Town of Lake Arthur!!

The Town of Lake Arthur Water System Notice of Emergency Water Outage at 10 p.m. on June 23, 2025, for citizens of Lake Arthur following repairs on the Fourth Street water well.

A boil advisory will be in effect for the entire Town of Lake Arthur until further notice. Due to these issues, the water produced by our water supply system has a questionable microbiological quality.
Therefore, as a precaution, the Town of Lake Arthur Water System is issuing a BOIL ADVISORY effective at 10 p.m. on June 23, 2025. This BOIL ADVISORY is to remain in effect until rescinded by the Water System.
It is recommended that all consumers disinfect their water before consuming it (including fountain drinks), making ice, brushing teeth, or using it for food preparation or rinsing of foods by the following means:
Boil water for one minute in a clean container. The one minute starts after the water has been brought to a rolling boil. (The flat taste can be eliminated by shaking the water in a clean bottle, pouring it from one clean container to another or by adding a small pinch of salt to each quart of water that is boiled.)
Again, please be sure to disinfect your own water prior to consumption until you have been advised otherwise.
The Town of Lake Arthur Water System will rescind this Boil Advisory upon notification from the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals - Office of Public Health that additional water samples collected from our water supply system have shown our water to be safe.
Sincerely,
Town of Lake Arthur Water System

A message from Superintendent John Hall pertaining to school closures due to severe weather.

All Jeff Davis Parish Schools will be closed Wednesday May 7. This decision comes with much thought and collaboration with state, parish and local governmental agencies. A severe weather system will be moving into the area tonight and into late Wednesday morning. Rain will continue through Thursday with the most severe weather being tonight and in the morning. This system will produce rapid flooding in areas and severe thunderstorms with possible wind advisories within some of the thunderstorm cells throughout the morning.

Although I am very sorry for this inconvenience, we will always choose safety for our students and staff rather than taking a chance. I will not place our bus operators and students in a situation that is dangerous along with thousands of students and families commuting to school during such a severe weather event.

When weather conditions permit (Wednesday afternoon), school and district administrative teams will inspect campuses to assess any potential damage to schools. This weather event will continue into Thursday so we will continue monitoring weather forecasts and road conditions to make a decision about the safe return of students and staff on Thursday, May 8.

We appreciate your understanding as our priority remains the safety of our students and staff.

Suspect in custody
Following a manhunt through the streets of Jennings, local law enforcement captured a Church Point man who was wanted for second-degree murder Tuesday afternoon.

Jennings Police Department captured 30-year-old Tyren Chavis shortly before 3 p.m. on April 8 at a residence on Penny Street, according to Police Chief Danny Semmes.

In the early morning hours that same day, Chavis fled on foot after officers attempted a traffic stop on the vehicle the suspect was driving in the area of East Nezpique and Louise streets. This led to a manhunt through the city.

Local schools were put on lockdown and security was beefed up at the Southwest Louisiana Veterans Home. Jeff Davis Parish Sheriff’s Office assisted with K-9s and drones and Allen Parish Correctional Chase Team lent a hand in the search. Chavis was taken into custody by JPD and will be booked into the Jeff Davis Parish Regional Consolidated Jail Facility on charges of aggravated flight from an officer and resisting arrest. Semmes said other charges are pending.

Semmes also reported an unknown female subject who fled from Chavis’ car during the traffic stop as well.
