Today in history:

75 years ago today, the Korean War began when North Korean troops crossed the 38th Parallel into South Korea. UN forces, largely made up of American soldiers, were the first to respond to this invasion but were overwhelmed. By July 1950, American forces had entered the conflict on South Korea's behalf.

37 months later, the Korean War came to an end with an armistice signed on 27 July, 1953. Since no peace treaty was ever reached, the conflict has been in a cease-fire condition for 75 years. As a result, North and South Korea are technically still at war.

Around 38,000 Americans died in action in Korea, with over 100,000 total casualties. Nearly 8000 remain unaccounted for and are classified as either POW or MIA. There are fewer than 400,000 surviving Korean War veterans in the US.

Don't forget, the Post 351 8th Annual Dice Run, which raises funds for the RFTW fuel stop in Oakley, is coming up on August 2. More details in the comments.

The longest day.

6 June, 1944. D-Day. Brigadier General Theodore Roosevelt, Jr., with the 4th Infantry Division, insisted on landing with his men on Normandy beaches. At 56 years old and using a cane (due to injuries sustained in WWI), he was the oldest soldier directly involved with Operation Overlord and the only general to land with the first wave of troops. During the invasion, his landing craft drifted as much as 2200 yards away from the intended target on Utah Beach. Upon learning that his troops had landed in the wrong place, he evaluated the situation, and said "We'll start the war from right here! "

Once inland, Gen. Roosevelt was known to spend his time amongst enlisted men, riding in a Jeep painted with the words "Rough Riders", in honor of the 1st Cavalry Brigade his father had led in battle during the Spanish American War.

Roosevelt passed away a little over a month after the invasion due to a heart attack and would later be posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his efforts on D-Day.

Today in History: Battle of Midway

One of the largest naval battles in history began on 4 June 1942. The United States soundly defeated Japan in the Battle of Midway, an intense naval campaign that lasted three days. Japan had begun bombing the US territory Midway Atoll, a small Pacific Island on the western end of the Hawaiian Archipeligo, fully expecting the United States to rush to defend the island. What Japan didn’t know is that the US had decoded Japanese radio chatter prior to Japan’s attack on Midway and were ready to launch their own ambush.

With knowledge of the size of Japan’s attack fleet and details of when it would occur, the US Pacific Fleet, under the command of Admiral Chester Nimitz, was waiting in strategic locations when Japanese planes arrived to bomb Midway. When the battle was over, the US had achieved a decisive victory. Japan had lost four aircraft carriers and a heavy cruiser, along with over 3000 dead and 248 aircraft destroyed. The US didn’t escape the battle unscathed, however, losing one carrier and a destroyer, along with 307 dead and 150 aircraft lost.

Midway was a major turning point in WWII. Japan’s naval capability was severely damaged and many of their best pilots lost. US officials believed that had the Japanese fleet not been stopped at Midway, it would have opened the door for a west coast invasion of the US mainland.
