When someone exits our life whether it is through death or otherwise we often wonder if we said all that needed expression.

A Very Public Death

We all try to live our lives with
dignity, yet when death comes
there is an element of surrealism,

It is our final baptism as we return
to God, no matter how oddly it
unravels,

It takes us unaware, any place,
any time, in an instant we can go
from living to dying, without
being cognizant,

One act of violence can change lives forever,
and it is an endeavor that cannot be undone,
it becomes part of history, a documentation
of tragedy.

Once the deed is unleashed
loved ones are shocked beyond
comprehension, and even in the
wake of the apprehension of the
grim reaper, there is hope it was
all a mistake, an error that could be
gently erased,

Except a public death is a startling
reality that no one is ready to face,
no one is ever prepared to accept its
casualties, it haunts, and taunts, and
silently wishes there was a rewind button,

Yet there is just the silence of a life gone,
endless nothing_____,
and we are mystified about the way it unfolded,
wondering if it could have been prevented,

In the end game there are never any answers,
just grievers, and believers knowing, that death
is not the end, it is the beginning of a different
kind of resurrection.
