N.J. man, 67, dies in fire at multi-family home

Authorities have identified the man who died in a two-alarm fire at a multi-family dwelling in Bergen County as a 67-year-old resident and say the fire does not appear suspicious.

Joseph A. Poling was pronounced dead at the scene of the fire, which occurred Friday afternoon in the 400 block of Third Street in Carlstadt.

Public records show Poling lived in the building and was a co-owner of the home.

Police and firefighters were called about 4 p.m. Friday as flames and smoke poured from the building.

Firefighters found Poling’s body on the second floor.

Mikie Sherrill will officially become New Jersey’s next governor Tuesday. Bad N.J. cops still get full pensions, report finds

Cops who faced criminal charges. Others forced to resign because of repeated on-the-job misconduct. Still other officers who were demoted, suspended or ordered by the courts to forfeit their jobs after being accused of wrongdoing.

Despite violating the public trust, those cops were allowed to retire and collect their full pensions as though they did nothing wrong, a new investigation by the New Jersey Office of the State Comptroller found.

Cops who abused their positions were still awarded full pensions, a state investigation charges.

Minneapolis shooting sparks N.J. protests amid official resistance to ICE crackdown

New Jersey immigrants’ rights supporters gathered Thursday night to mourn the Minneapolis woman fatally shot 1,200 miles away by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer, and to denounce the presence of ICE in communities across the country.

Tiny N.J. school district wants to hike taxes a shocking 27% to save its only school

One of New Jersey’s smallest school districts is asking residents to approve a steep tax increase to keep its only school open after years of state aid cuts left the district with a nearly $700,000 shortfall.

The Ocean Gate School District, which serves 149 students in grades pre-K through 6, will hold a special election on Jan. 27. Voters will be asked to exceed the state’s tax levy cap and permanently raise school taxes by more than 27% to help fund operations for the 2026–27 school year.

About 150 students attend the district’s only school, which officials say could close if voters reject the tax hike.

25-year-old motorcyclist dies in crash at Jersey Shore

A 25-year-old Ocean County man died Monday night after he crashed his motorcycle in South Toms River, police said.

Kenneth Gerisch, of Toms River, was driving south on Herflicker Boulevard as he approached a section of the road that merges onto Atlantic City Boulevard when he lost control of the motorcycle, according to a statement from the South Toms River Police Department.

The Ocean County resident lost control of his motorcycle while riding it in South Toms River, police said.

Three people were taken into custody following a fight that preceded a gunshot at Willowbrook Mall in Passaic County on Tuesday, authorities said.

The Wayne Police Department responded shortly after 7 p.m. for reports of shots fired near the mall’s food court as multiple people fled the area, Police Chief Joseph Rooney said in a statement on Facebook.

Police said the mall will reopen Wednesday after two adults and one juvenile were taken into custody.
