N.J. district considers starting school as late as 9 a.m., angering some parents

An Atlantic County school district is considering a last-minute change to make start times later for all grade levels, officials said.

Pleasantville Public Schools is the latest New Jersey school district to discuss a later start time amid national concerns about students, particularly teenagers, not getting enough sleep.

The district enrolls students in four elementary schools, one middle school and one high school.

Under the proposal, the reporting time at Pleasantville High School would move from 7:45 a.m. to 8 a.m., according to Fox 29 Philadelphia.

The district is the latest in New Jersey to discuss giving kids more time to sleep.

Overnight fire tears through N.J. assisted living facility

Fire crews remained on scene Monday morning working through the aftermath of a blaze that tore through an assisted living facility in Medford overnight.

The three-alarm fire was reported around 2:15 a.m. at the building along the 100 block of Tuckerton Road, officials said.

The building was unoccupied at the time of the blaze, officials said.

2 trapped, 1 struck when N.J. home’s tree branch falls onto residential street

A large branch fell from a tree in a Teaneck yard on Thursday morning, trapping two women and also striking a third pedestrian, according to police.

The two women, 44 and 45, both of Bergenfield, were on a sidewalk adjacent to the tree near the intersection of Sussex and Churchill roads when the branch collapsed around 8:05 a.m., blocking the street entirely, Teaneck police said. They were taken to Hackensack University Medical Center after being rescued from beneath the tree, police said. They sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Five police officers together raised the branch, freeing the trapped women.

Three weeks after her doctor told her she would need to restart her chemo pills, Josefina Rosa sat at her work desk and made a wish.

She wished the mayor would name a street sign after her, said Rosa, known around parts of Camden for her work to raise awareness about cancer and other causes through her car club.

Swimmer caught in rip current dies after being pulled from ocean at Jersey Shore beach, official says

A man died Monday night after he got caught in a rip current while swimming at an unguarded Seaside Heights beach, officials said.

Rescuers were called to the Webster Avenue beach shortly before 7 p.m. for a report of multiple swimmers in distress, Seaside Heights Assistant Fire Chief Tim Farrell told NJ Advance Media.

Six other people were rescued from the ocean, officials said.

N.J. cop who broke ‘blue wall’ gets $2.1M in retaliation case

A New Jersey police officer won a $2.1 million judgment last week after claiming he was branded as a “rat” and passed over for promotions because he helped expose police brutality.

Teaneck Police Department officer Glenn Coley filed a whistleblower lawsuit in 2022 alleging his career was derailed after he broke rank and gave sworn testimony supporting a township resident’s account that officers used excessive force.

The officer contradicted other officers’ claims in an alleged police brutality case.

N.J. synagogue collapses in fire, rabbi’s family escapes

A synagogue in Rutherford went up in flames early Friday, drawing a response from firefighters across Bergen County before the building collapsed.

No injuries were reported, but police said a rabbi and his family escaped unharmed. The cause of the fire is unclear.

The 4-alarm fire began about 2:45 a.m. at Beth El Chabad in the 100 block of Montross Avenue, authorities said.

ABC-7 reported the building appeared to collapse about an hour after firefighters arrived.

A Fox News contributor was criticized after suggesting that gerrymandering is the reason why California is led by a Democrat governor and two Democrat senators.

Kennedy, whose full name is Lisa Kennedy Montgomery, suggested Monday on Fox News that the drawing of California’s congressional districts is why the state has elected Democrats to some of its most powerful elected positions. However, social media users pointed out that gerrymandering would not help Democrats in statewide elections like the governor’s race or Senate seats.

Whale dies after collision with boat caught on video in Jersey Shore bay

A minke whale died Saturday in a Jersey Shore bay a short time after videos showed it collide with a boat, nearly capsizing the vessel and throwing a person overboard.

The dead whale was still seen in Barnegat Bay as of Saturday night, Sheila Dean, director of the Brigantine- based Marine Mammal Stranding Center, told NJ Advance Media on the phone at 8:30 p.m.

The whale could be seen nearly capsizing a small vessel, sending one person overboard in the Barnegat Bay.

N.J. weather: Weekend forecast calls for big temperature change, rip current risk

Temperatures will be significantly cooler across New Jersey compared to recent days, with highs in the low to mid 70s on Friday and climbing to the upper 70s to low 80s on Saturday.

Northeast winds could gust up to 30 mph, particularly along the Jersey Shore.

Scattered showers and drizzle are possible throughout Friday, but the nasty storms that triggered flash flood warnings and even two tornado warnings Thursday evening are gone.

“Cloudy and a bit breezy today, but fortunately a much deserved break from July’s heat and humidity with temperatures in the 60s and 70s,” the National Weather Service said Friday morning. “A few showers/drizzle possible, but largely a dry day.”

Scattered showers and drizzle are possible throughout Friday in New Jersey, but the dangerous thunderstorms are gone.

A CNN panel devolved into chaos after conservative pundit Scott Jennings defended President Donald Trump’s tariff and trade agenda on Wednesday.

The panel on “CNN NewsNight with Abby Phillip” discussed Trump’s latest tariff announcements and the surprisingly positive GDP numbers released on Wednesday before getting into a heated exchange on tariffs.

Ciattarelli opposes ICE plan to house detainees at N.J. base, but blames Dems for ‘crisis’

Republican gubernatorial candidate Jack Ciattarelli opposes a plan to use part of a sprawling U.S. military base in Burlington County to temporarily house immigration detainees, though he blames Democrats for the situation, the candidate and his campaign said this week.

Ciattarelli’s campaign issued a statement by the GOP gubernatorial nominee and former state senator from Somerset County on Monday night accusing his opponent and other Democrats of creating a “crisis” that forced immigration officials to obtain permission from the Pentagon to house detainees in tents at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst.
