Discarded cigarette could have caused fire that killed 2 N.J. girls, officials say

The cause of a massive fire that killed two children and displaced more than 20 in Cumberland County in April could not be definitively determined, according to investigators, but they said improperly discarded smoking materials may have sparked the blaze.

Valery Mariana Cardona Gomez, 13, and Gissel Samanta “Sammy” Cardona Gomez, 11, died when the fire destroyed multiple homes on the 300 block of South 4th Street in Millville on April 9.

Investigators labeled the cause of the April fire undetermined, but said they cannot rule out improperly discarded smoking materials.

N.J. weather: Scattered thunderstorms in Tuesday forecast after massive flooding, torrential rain

More thunderstorms are in the forecast for New Jersey on Tuesday as the state recovers from torrential downpours that flooded roads, knocked out power to thousands and caused a state of emergency.

The heaviest storms with the chance for flash flooding are expected to remain south of New Jersey on Tuesday.

The storms that reach the state should be isolated to scattered, though additional flooding is possible in those spots

New Jersey is expected to miss the heaviest rainfall in the latest round of thunderstorms on Tuesday, but more flash flooding is possible.

N.J. weather: Flood watch issued for 6 counties Monday with thunderstorms in forecast

A flood watch has been issued for six New Jersey counties that could get slammed Monday by heavy thunderstorms and potential flash flooding.

The flood watch issued by the National Weather Service for Monday afternoon and evening includes Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Morris, Somerset and Warren counties.

“Several rounds of showers and thunderstorms will produce heavy rain with rainfall rates as high as 1-2″ per hour that will result in localized flash flooding," the weather service said. “While is there some risk for flooding throughout the forecast area, the main risk will be in the watch area.”

Rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour could trigger localized flash flooding in parts of New Jersey on Monday.

N.J. mall’s construction ‘war zone’ forced out beloved senior center. Here’s where they’re going next.

After being displaced by ongoing construction work at the former Monmouth Mall, a nonprofit group that works with hundreds of New Jersey seniors says it has found a new home.

The Senior Citizens Activities Network, known as SCAN, was forced out of its longtime space in the basement of the Monmouth Mall in Eatontown last month. The group had operated out of the 3,800-square-foot, lower-level classroom space since 1988, offering programs to hundreds of seniors from Monmouth and Ocean counties.

After Kushner's mall redevelopment created "war zone" conditions, a nonprofit group for seniors has found a new location near the Jersey Shore.
