Hudson County 2022 in review: Top stories of the year

DeGise capped off the episode with a tone-deaf, 4-minute diatribe at a City Council meeting in which she portrayed herself as the victim.

There was tragedy and triumph, plenty of the usual unkept political promises, and controversy over issues like recreational cannabis sales and the future of Liberty State Park.

Hoboken City Council to vote on controversial dispensary, but it’s likely the ‘Story’ won’t end there

The condo association’s insurance will not renew its policy if cannabis is sold on the property and the association may be forced “to hire additional security, should cannabis and/or ma*****na be sold at or in the vicinity of the Condominium, thus adversely affecting the general welfare and safety of the Association,” an amended lawsuit says.

The controversial cannabis applicant will be up for a vote that could grant them all the needed approvals to head for state approval.

The best pasteles aren’t found in a store. They come from this crossing guard’s kitchen. | Calavia-Robertson

And after only a year in Jersey, I’m technically still new here. So, one morning at the school when another mom named Marisol Santana, who’s Puerto Rican, mischievously leaned in and said, “You know about Millie, right?” I gave her a puzzled look and said, “Yeah, the sweet crossing guard? What about her?”

All through the year, she helps families safely cross the street. But come Christmastime, she helps many "feel at home" with her pasteles.

“We are a suburban-ish type town,” Turner said. “First of all, it is a way to break rent control in ... multi-family rent-controlled buildings. So it takes affordable housing away from people who need the apartments.”

Turner says short-stay rentals are taking away housing opportunities and causing rent prices to rise.

State Sen. Nicholas Sacco says "There is no question that an investment in public transportation is important, and in the county and state a renewed focus over the last few years has been placed on it and will continue to be."

The county, state and region require a Hudson County Turnpike Extension that is built to safely accommodate modern and future vehicles, meet increasing demands and ensure conditions that will reduce traffic and idling, the author writes.

"The cost of misclassification is painful, pervasive, and persistent. It takes advantage of honest workers who fall prey to a system that deprives them of their legitimate workplace rights. Imagine working overtime yet not getting paid or not having health insurance if you get hurt on the job." - Assistant EST Anthony Abrantes

"Who will help me?"
On Saturday, February 27th, 2022 This was sent to the editor of the Tri-City Herald newspaper by one of the victims who is 16 years old. However, I cannot find that it was published so I am posting it here:
"Dear Editor, My name is Sandrea Lagunas, I am resident of Benton County, Washington. I write to you because all efforts have been exhausted, I am taking a stand to protect my siblings and myself, but I cannot do it alone. The legal litigation between my parents has been ongoing since 2006 and for my brothers since 2014 in Colville and now, Spokane, Washington. I knew my situation was bad and when I took a stand for myself, I saw that I wasn't the only one being harmed. My parenting plan created for my best interest has been used as a weapon to cause multiple harms and my 5th and 14th amendment denied. There has been court litigation over 400 times ongoing in one case, at least 60 reports to CPS overall. No one is truly listening to children living within this situation. There is unnecessary harm with lifelong consequences. I ask, to rally for justice from my community, to help a broken system not be broken. Help me stand up, to the oppression and for my fundamental rights as a person for life, liberty, and happiness, because it matters. Who will help me?"

This man has scammed over 20 women he meets on dating sites. His name is , but uses several alias. He's wanted on warrants in Michigan and Oklahoma, he was last driving a school bus with Michigan plates or possibly a rental car he obtained fraudulently; it has been said he has abandoned the bus now, , possibly near Norco, CA; in that case a tow company would hopefully be called. He could be on foot, using Uber or renting cars again. He claims to be a millionaire working as a pipe fitter and underwater welder and works for union 211 out of Houston, Texas; he doesn't even work! Stays at motels he obtains by fraud or has a woman use her ID, truck stops or campgrounds. He uses a text now app and changes his number frequently. Last seen in Norco CA but travels the United States scamming women. May be headed to Nevada. He has victims in Illinois, Tennessee, Michigan, west Virginia, Texas, Alabama, New Mexico, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Louisiana, California, Nevada, Montana, Kentucky and Ohio that has come forward.

Politicians lie. It’s why they don’t like doing interviews. Here is Mayor Jimmy Davis at a 2018 editorial round table with The Jersey Journal where a reporter asked him specifically “You don’t think thirty year abatements will be approved passed this point?” The mayor said No. Over the next four years the mayor would sign off on nearly 40 tax breaks for developers most of which were long-term tax breaks.
