Scrape everything bare. Frame it in. Roll out fabric. Import soil. And kill every plant that shows up uninvited. Then spend the rest of the season buying fertilizer, irrigation, sprays, and amendments to replace everything we removed.

Healthy ground wants cover. It wants living roots, decay, insects, fungi, and plants doing different jobs. That may not look “clean,” but clean is a human preference. Not a biological reality.

If your garden falls apart the minute you stop hauling in products, it isn’t thriving. You’re keeping it on life support.

The mess everyone is so proud to eliminate is the same living system they keep paying to replace.

We've been trained to look at a struggling plant and immediately ask one question: What does it need me to add?

Nitrogen. Phosphorus. Potassium. Calcium. Another amendment. Another bag. Another bottle.

But there's a question that should come first: Why isn't the soil supplying it? Soil isn't supposed to be an inert bucket that we continuously refill with nutrients. In a functioning soil ecosystem, bacteria and fungi break down organic material and interact with minerals, predators consume microbes and release plant-available nutrients, roots pump carbon into the rhizosphere, and mycorrhizal fungi dramatically expand the area plants can explore for water and nutrients.

That's the fertility system.

Now till it repeatedly, leave it exposed to brutal summer heat, remove the organic matter, let it dry out, and disrupt fungal networks year after year. Then when the plants struggle, go buy another bag of fertilizer.

We've gotten incredibly good at treating the symptoms of dysfunctional soil while completely ignoring the system that's supposed to be doing the work.

Sometimes your soil really is deficient and an amendment absolutely is warranted. But if your first response to every fertility problem is adding something from a bag, you're skipping the most important question: why isn't the biology underneath your plants doing more of that work for you?

Stop treating soil like a container for fertilize. Build the system that creates fertility.

Call it dramatic if you want, but go stick a thermometer into exposed garden soil in the middle of a summer afternoon and then tell me we're creating ideal conditions for life.

We love talking about soil biology right up until protecting that biology becomes inconvenient. We add compost, buy amendments, talk about fungi and microbes, and then leave the entire ecosystem sitting uncovered under hours of direct summer sun while moisture disappears and surface temperatures climb.

And somehow that's considered normal gardening.

The plants might survive because we're standing there with a hose replacing the water that's being lost. They might keep producing because we're adding fertility to replace what the system isn't cycling efficiently enough on its own. But keeping plants alive through constant intervention isn't the same thing as building healthy soil.

Look at how nature handles July. Forest floors have litter. Prairies have living cover and standing residue. Even disturbed ground starts throwing up plants as quickly as conditions allow. The soil doesn't remain naked unless something keeps making it naked.

It's not a question of whether you can grow vegetables in bare soil.

The question is why we're deliberately creating harsher conditions for the biology we're supposedly trying to cultivate.

One of the biggest contradictions I keep seeing in gardening is how often we talk about the importance of living soil while creating conditions that make life underground harder to sustain. We buy compost, inoculate with mycorrhizal fungi, brew compost teas, and spend money on products designed to increase microbial activity... then we leave the soil exposed through the hottest part of the year as if billions of living organisms aren't depending on that environment.

If soil biology really is the engine that drives healthy gardens, then protecting it should be just as important as feeding it.

Take a walk through a forest in the middle of summer. The soil isn't bare. It's shaded by leaves, insulated by organic matter, and buffered from temperature extremes. Nature spends an incredible amount of energy keeping the ground covered because the life beneath it depends on stable conditions. Then we rake everything away, leave the soil baking in full sun, and wonder why we have to work so hard to keep it productive.

Your plants may still grow.

But the question is...at what cost to the ecosystem beneath them?

What do y'all think? If soil biology matters as much as we say it does, why do we so often expose it to the harshest conditions possible?

One of the biggest mindset shifts I've had over the last few years is realizing that bare soil is almost never where nature intends to stop. It's where nature begins. Whether it's after a wildfire, a flood, construction, logging, or tillage, the first thing that happens isn't that the soil stays exposed. It gets covered. Pioneer plants move in, organic matter starts accumulating, and fungal networks reconnect. Biology returns. The entire system begins rebuilding itself.

The strange part is that we've normalized interrupting that recovery. We till, w**d, scrape, spray, and expose the ground over and over again, then spend the rest of the season trying to replace the resilience the ecosystem was building for free with fertilizer, irrigation, and other inputs.

Can you grow healthy plants that way? Absolutely. People do it every year.

But I can't help wondering if we've mistaken disturbance for management. The goal should be building soil and an ecosystem that's resilient enough that it no longer needs to live in a constant state of recovery.

What do y'all think? When you see bare soil in an agricultural setting, does it make you cringe? Because once you understand what's really going on in that soil, it just doesn't make sense that we do everything in our power to disrupt it in the name of neat and orderly.

Take a walk through a forest, a prairie, or an old field that hasn't been disturbed in years, you'll notice something almost immediately.

The ground is covered.

Leaves. Grasses. Wildflowers. Fallen branches. Decaying stems. Moss. Living plants. Last year's growth feeding this year's life.

It's surprisingly difficult to find bare soil in a healthy ecosystem because nature doesn't leave it exposed for long.

That raises an interesting question.

If virtually every natural system is constantly trying to protect the soil, why have we made exposed soil the standard in so many of our gardens?

Maybe we've mistaken "clean" for "healthy."

Ground cover isn't something nature adds after the ecosystem is established. It's one of the reasons the ecosystem is able to establish in the first place.

Maybe the w**ds, the leaf litter, the mulch, and the living groundcovers aren't getting in the way of healthy soil. Maybe they're part of the blueprint.

We already know what happens when we leave our own skin exposed to intense sun for too long.

It gets hotter. It dries out. It becomes damaged and more vulnerable.

So why do we expect the ground beneath our gardens to respond any differently?

The soil isn't just dirt. It's home to an entire living community of bacteria, fungi, insects, worms, and countless other organisms that make healthy plant growth possible. Most of that life evolved beneath a layer of leaves, grasses, fallen stems, and other organic matter that buffered it from the harshest conditions.

Then we come along, scrape everything away, and call it "clean."

The result is soil that's hotter, drier, and less hospitable to the very biology we're depending on to grow healthy plants.

The more I study natural ecosystems, the more I notice that bare soil is surprisingly rare. Nature covers it as quickly as it can.

Maybe it's because living soil was never meant to bake in the first place.

One thing I can't seem to reconcile is this...

Gardeners are constantly being told how important soil biology is. Buy compost. Add microbes. Feed the soil. Protect the fungi.

Then we leave that same soil sitting bare in full summer sun where surface temperatures can climb far above the surrounding air.

If someone told you your engine was overheating, you wouldn't pull the radiator out and keep driving.

So why do we do the ecological equivalent to the billions of organisms our gardens depend on?

The irony is that nature solved this problem a long time ago.

Leaves, grass, plant litter, living groundcovers, mulch...

Healthy ecosystems don't leave the soil exposed because the biology underneath depends on a stable environment. It needs moisture. It needs organic matter. It needs protection from temperature extremes.

The more I learn about living soil, the more I think we've lost what it means to build up what you have rather than to be constantly playing catch-up with external inputs.

Maybe that's why so many gardens seem to require constant intervention just to keep producing.

That might sound strange, but think about what happens when land is left alone.

It doesn't stay bare.

The first plants begin to appear. Then more species move in. Organic matter starts accumulating. Fungal networks expand. The soil becomes darker, softer, and more biologically active. Year after year, the system keeps building on itself.

Nature doesn't seem to view exposed soil as an end goal. It treats it as something to recover from.

That's one of the biggest perspective shifts I've had over the past couple of years. I used to think bare, w**d-free ground looked clean and productive. Now I find myself wondering what stage of recovery the land is actually in.

The irony is that we often spend a tremendous amount of time trying to keep the ground in the very condition that nature is constantly trying to move beyond.

Maybe the healthiest gardens aren't the ones that look the most controlled.

Maybe they're the ones that function the most like living ecosystems.

When the weather turns against you, your plants don't suddenly decide to become resilient.

They're relying on whatever system already exists beneath the surface.

A healthy soil food web cycles nutrients even when conditions aren't perfect. Fungal networks extend the reach of plant roots. Organic matter acts like a sponge during dry periods. Billions of organisms are constantly building structure, storing carbon, and keeping the system functioning.

None of that happens overnight.

And none of it survives indefinitely if it's constantly being disturbed.

I think we've spent decades chasing productivity while overlooking resilience. We've gotten really good at growing plants with enough irrigation, fertilizer, and intervention.

The harder question is this: How well does the garden perform when you stop helping it?

That's where healthy soil separates itself from exhausted soil.

The goal shouldn't be a garden that survives because we're constantly propping it up. The goal should be a garden that can withstand stress because the biology beneath it has been allowed to mature.

That's the difference between managing plants and building an ecosystem.
