The tiniest travelers with one of the biggest journeys.

They are hereeeee! The male ruby-throated hummingbird has just arrived right. Each spring, they make an incredible solo migration, many flying nonstop across the Gulf of Mexico, guided by instinct alone. And just like clockwork, the males arrive first, staking out territory and searching for reliable food sources before the females follow.

That’s where the garden comes in Salvia and cuphea aren’t just beautiful they are lifelines. Unlike feeders, these nectar rich flowers provide not only natural fuel but also support the tiny insects that hummingbirds rely on for protein. It’s a more complete, balanced way to nourish them, just as nature intended.
If you choose to use feeders make sure you clean them daily and NEVER use the red stuff!
Plant it, and they will come… and if you’re lucky, they’ll stay awhile.
Here is a list of plants that they love:
Black and blue salvia ( has the best)
Vermillionaire (cuphea)
Hot lips salvia
Fuschia (shade)
Petunias ()
Native honeysuckle

Happy Earth Day!

Today is a gentle reminder that this beautiful planet we call home is shared with the tiniest, most magical creatures. The bees buzzing from bloom to bloom and the butterflies dancing on the breeze.

These little pollinators do so much more than brighten our gardens they are essential to life itself. Every flower they visit helps sustain our ecosystems, our food, and the natural beauty we cherish every day.

Plant the flowers. Skip the pesticides. Leave a little wild space. Even the smallest garden can become a sanctuary.

Let’s protect what sustains us.

Here are some spring containers to brighten up this gloomy day!

I’ve included the plant “recipe” in each photo to make it easy to recreate. Most of these planters will bloom through late spring.

For long-lasting color, try mixing plants with different bloom times so you’ll have something beautiful all season right up until it’s time to switch over to your summer containers.

FROST WARNING ❄️

A frost is expected tonight. Please remember to protect your tender plants:

• Move seedlings into a garage or shed
• Place smaller pots closer to the house for added warmth
• Cover tender perennials with buckets or frost cloth
• Protect container plants with tarp or burlap
• Obelisks are especially helpful for supporting covers without damaging foliage

Let’s hope this is the last of the cold weather. Stay warm and keep those gardens safe!

Daffodils are one of the first bursts of color to pop up from bulbs in the spring. Their cheerful yellow, creamy white, and even soft peach blooms bring instant joy to the garden, patio, or tabletop. I love planting them in pots so I can enjoy them up close, then I replant the bulbs in the garden once they finish flowering for them to return again next year.

They make excellent cut flowers and smell amazing. A small cluster in a simple vase, glass jar, or tucked into a mixed arrangement instantly brightens a room and lifts the spirit. Daffodils pair beautifully with tulips, hyacinths, or forced quince and lilac branches.

There are so many different varieties and colors, and they are all beautiful. If you notice they aren’t blooming as well over time, try gently dividing crowded clumps to give them more room to thrive. I like to feed mine with Espoma Bulb-tone for strong, gorgeous bulbs year after year!

Daffodils are such an easy reminder that brighter and warmer days are ahead.

I had the pleasure of attending the open house at Johnson’s Locust Hall yesterday. This stunning 325 acre, family owned farm is truly a magical setting for weddings and special events. The main house and historic barns capture a timeless Ralph Lauren aesthetic, creating an atmosphere that is both elegant and welcoming.

During the growing season, guests can enjoy pick-your-own flowers, strawberries, flowers, peaches, pumpkins, and apples. The farm market also offers their own farm raised meats along with delicious baked goods and thoughtfully curated housewares. Their farm-to-table dinners are an experience not to be missed.

If you’re looking for a beautiful countryside venue or a charming day on the farm, Johnson’s Locust Hall is well worth a visit.

Starting a new series on early spring garden chores!

One of my favorite perennials, Hellebores (Lenten Rose), benefits from an early spring haircut. Simply cut off last year’s leaves, being careful not to cut the new growth. This helps the plant focus its energy on producing fresh flowers and healthy new foliage.

Let me know in the comments what you’d like me to cover in this series!

January 29, 2025, I learned my cancer had returned. What followed were 7 surgeries (including HIPEC) and 47 total days in the hospital.
Fast forward to January 29, 2026 — I’m finished with chemo and ready to grow again.

This spring is about rebuilding strength, getting my hands back in the soil, and welcoming a new garden season. Thank you to this incredible community for the kindness, encouragement, and support that carried me through. It truly means more than words can say.

This picture demonstrates why I use natural decor in my pots. Winterberries, red twig dogwood, and evergreen cuttings provide food and shelter for the beautiful birds in our yards. So ditch the plastic decor and help out your local wildlife!
