The Jonesboro High School BCAL Academy needed help with promoting literacy for the elementary schools in the school district. Our school district has a large number of students that tested below their grade level for reading. The school has implemented RISE training to help improve these statistics. The EAST students worked with the library and the Teacher Cadet class to gather appropriate level books. Using the Padcaster, EAST students recorded the books. In some instances this took several takes to get a good image and sound quality. Then we used IMovie to edit all of the recordings. These then were used to create a digital library for the students. The digital books were all shared using a Google Drive folder. EAST contributed 15 digital books to the library for the elementary students. The BCAL Academy was very appreciative of our help. The elementary teachers and students also enjoyed this new digital library.

The beautification committee asked for help planning future projects for the city of Jonesboro. They wanted projects to make the city look better and function for the people.Ever since I was a child I enjoyed going to the CWL’s Park with my brother and cousins and play around. The CWL Park holds a special place in my heart. I remember seeing so much life in the park but in recent days it’s mostly been dead. Even before COVID-19 the park was in bad shape. I wanted to give the park a new fresh start. Which gave me the idea of a dog park!

There are many dog owners in our town and only one small dog park that exists right now. After surveying, friends, family and town members the dog park idea received all positive feedback.

I learned how to use SketchUp and Google Draw to create my designs for the park. There will be special trash cans in the park. Looks simple but I had the idea that we could turn the top into a dispenser. Why would may ask? To help with owners who forgot to bring doggy bags. Also, this will help keep the area clean. This will help the owners that forget to bring bags and they can leave the waste here.

I designed the fence to have a concrete under the fence. Why? For owners that have dog’s that like to dig under fences it makes it where they can’t easily escape. Plus it keeps from having to fill in the holes more frequently.

I know building the park is going to take not only time but also money, so I took into account that maybe I should gather sponsors from companies that make dog treats to help. I made a simple sketch of a treat dispenser. Just like candy dispensers it takes coins to have whatever is in the machine. This not only helps raise money, but gives those companies a chance to sell their treats to dog owners for cheaper but profitable prices. Also for owners who want to give their dog’s treats but forgot to bring some they can just buy some right there for the convenience! I am working with the city beautification committee on this project and our next meeting is March 17th.

Not just in our community but in our school there was a problem that had to be solved. Our school has about 100 students that can not speak English. I am not just stating students from Mexico, but from many other places such as China, Spain, England at Jonesboro High School. Imagine how hard it is to not know a single word your teachers or classmates are saying? These students do not have much help. I knew I had to help these students. I personally know the struggle coming from a family that half are bilingual, and half only speak Spanish. Not just that, but I have a close classmate in my EAST class that only speaks Spanish. I can see the struggle my facilitator goes through while trying to communicate with him. Yes, I do help translate things back and forth but just imagine how much cooler it would be if he could learn English and interact with all of his classmates including the teachers. My first thought was, “ I need to get this project going ASAP”.

I came up with the idea to turn this problem into a project. I brainstormed my ideas for this project. My project consists of a folder for each slide. These slides are based on different subjects, words, and phrases. On each individual slide show there is the name of the object in English and then a picture of the object. After the slide is done, I start recording myself reading each slide. I state the object in Spanish and then state it in English. I save those recordings into a different folder for voice overs. I am still in the process of making my own app to upload these recordings with the slides. QR Codes are also in the process of making. QR Codes are needed for the students to scan. The students will be able to scan these QR Codes to take them to the voice over of the slides. There are so many more steps to go through to finish my project but it is all a work in progress.

According to a Microsoft research article, many girls in the U.S. are not sure how to go about getting into STEM careers. Our class received a new Canon camera through DonorsChoose.org for this project. We practiced using this new camera and software like Final Cut Pro. We brainstormed about careers in STEM. We collaborated with students and community members to come up with a list of women working in our area in these careers. We then came up with a list of questions to use during interviews with these women. These women will help guide our students through the steps to work in these career areas. After the interviews are all completed we will create multi-media advertisements to share their amazing STEM career stories. The print ads will have QR codes that will send the viewer to the interview videos. The ads will be placed around the school and on the EAST social media platforms. These ads will solve part of the knowledge gap problem for girls going into STEM careers.

The Jonesboro High School administration asked for an idea to help the school celebrate Black History Month. The project team wanted to make this a fun and interactive event since we could not have an assembly due to Covid-19 restrictions. The idea of a QR Code Scavenger Hunt to simulate the Underground Railroad was pitched to the principal. This idea was approved. The project team researched and came up with important facts about Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad. A path was determined for the students to travel around the campus in order to find the clues. The school map was developed and labelled with 10 stops where the clues would be posted. Using Canva for the first time, a project member created a poster with an image of Harriet Tubman. Students created a script with clues, facts and keywords. These were then turned into short video clips. The clips were stored in a Google Drive folder. A team member then learned how to create QR codes. The created QR codes linked the participants to a Google Form. In order to get into the form the participants needed the key word from the previous stop. The Google Form contained the videos with the facts, clues and key word for the next stop. This project solved a problem for the school and helped to educate the students as well as teachers. Students completing the scavenger hunt received candy treat bags, hats and masks that were donated by Walgreens. The project was highlighted on the local TV news station and the school district’s social media outlets.

Due to CoVid 19 and the shut down of schools many students are having social and emotional health issues. According to one study the mental health-related hospital visits rose 24 percent in the year 2020 for children ages 5-11. The children reported stress, anxiety, and panic. Many young children need help dealing with their emotions during this time.

This was a joint project between EAST students and the Teacher Cadet class.

With the help of DonorsChoose.org we created Social and Emotional Care bags for our clients. The clients for this project were 2 elementary classes in different schools.

Each student received a Care bag with the following items:

1 box of crayons

1 paint brush

1 flat rock to be decorated as a “Happy Rock”

2 stickers

candy

1 glove

2 Paint containers

Mini-coloring book with emotions activities.

QR codes for lessons guiding them through the activities

QR codes that lead them to videos of EAST students reading different books about emotions.

QR codes that linked the student to painting tutorials for the creation of their own Happy Rocks.

The high school students recorded videos reading the books, teaching the lessons with the activity books and teaching the elementary students how to paint the Happy Rock. EAST students gained new knowledge about video editing and creating QR codes during this project. High school students also received their own journals so that they could record their own emotional health and growth during this project.

The elementary teachers and students loved their Care Bags. The high school students also enjoyed creating their own “Happy Rocks” and writing in their emotional tracker journals.

In addition to media, one of our other big projects in school promotions. Our clients are most evidently our basketball program and esports team, but is extended to our entire district. The problem at hand was lack of involvement due to the pandemic. Many of our students and community seem out of the know. Most dominantly, we have been involved with our boys’ basketball program in creating media and graphic design for their social media, allowing us to connect with the community. The marketing plan was to establish a uniformed pattern, portraying a unity between different designs; we wanted to create graphics that would appeal to the community and student body to create excitement for our school's basketball games.Through the use of Photoshop, we are able to be creative in advertising for the different programs throughout our school. Self directed learning was achieved through learning the photoshop software. Prior to this project, some were not as familiar with Adobe Photoshop. Collaboration with coaches, teachers, and administrators showed growth of communication skills as well.

This year in EAST the class has been asked to create several things with the 3D printer to help solve problems. The first item created was an ear saver. Many of the front line workers during the pandemic were suffering from wearing masks for a long time. The masks rubbed sores on their ears. Using Tinkercad and Cura we created the ear saver. We printed lots of these and donated them to two local hospitals and many medical clinics. The ear saver fits on the back of a person’s head so that the mask does not touch the ears. This immediately solved the problem for these workers.

We have also been asked by an orthopedic surgeon to create a hip model. The doctor said that he was not able to get a model and that all he had were pictures. The pictures made it hard for him to discuss injuries with patients. We worked through several different design stages as we communicated with the doctor. Not all of the prints went well. We had to overcome some issues. Using Tinkercad and Cura we learned how to add in supports for the design process. This helped a lot. This hip will be used as an example when the doctor talks to patients.

Through project based learning, our EAST program is partnered with NASA through NASA’s HUNCH initiative. HUNCH represents “high schools united with NASA to create hardware.” Our sector of the program resides in the “Video and Media” portion, where we create educational videos for NASA, advocating career and technical education. Each year we are presented with a prompt. Last year, we received a national honorable mention award for our video regarding lunar colonization. Through our partnership, we are permitted to use NASA files and research in our productions. We work alongside Dr. Zeek, a representative from NASA, who guides us and advises us throughout our work process. This year’s challenge is to create a video around the idea of advancing space exploration through manufacturing. As we use NASA databases and other resources, we are in the process of creating a video using iMovie and Final Cut Pro.
