Episode 33 of the Storytown Podcast is now live!
This Halloween episode from the vault (October 2014) follows a traveling writer in the 1930's who comes to a small town in East Tennessee with lots of secrets to hide, including a haunted doll, the Chester Inn State Historic Site & Museum ghosts, and the Witch of the Nolichucky River. The Heritage Alliance Deborah Montanti also pays a visit to refute some of the more silly assertions about the ghosts of Historic Jonesborough (or tries to do so!) in the "Ask the Historian" segment. “There was a little room [at Booker T Washington School] that had a stove, refrigerator and a sink, and the older girls had to cook for the rest of the students. My next door neighbor, JoAnn, and I cooked beans and cornbread and cabbage, a whole meal. We’d leave our desks, stir the beans, take out the cornbread and go back to do school work.”

- Nancy Robinson

From a very young age, JoAnn Fitzgerald served her community. As a child, she served meals for her community as a student at Booker T Washington School. As an adult, she served ETSU as an employee for 30 years and Bethel Church as a trustee.

“When we lived in the house in Jonesborough, we used to say we had a ghost there named “George” because when you couldn’t find things, you would say that “George moved them” and then you would turn around and the thing would be there. One time Mother had gone to a place in Jonesboro, GA and discovered that they had a ghost at that house named “George” and there was a railroad track close to that house as well. And so, we joked about George going on the train from Jonesboro, GA to Jonesborough, TN”

We're collecting recipes this month for Storytown Asks "What's Cooking?"

The Parson's Table served these rolls for many years here in Jonesborough, and the recipe comes from Jimmy Neil Smith's beloved grandmother, Mrs. Pearl Jackson.

Parker House Rolls
1 tbs salt
1 pkg yeast
3 tbs melted butter
1 pt S. milk
Plain Flour (what it takes to do the job)

Heat the milk until a little skim. Cool to real lukewarm. Dissolve yeast in lukewarm water, about 1/2 cup water. add to milk, sugar, butter, yeast, and enough flour for a real thin batter. Let set in warm place for 40 min or longer. Now add more flour and salt to a medium dough. Set rise in double thickness, add more flour to work and roll out on board. Cut and dip in melted butter. Fold over and let rise to what you think is enough. Bake 450 degrees until brown.

"And my daddy would kill the hogs, you know? That was basically all that was done that day. Killing those hogs and blocking ‘em out and putting ‘em in the smokehouse and salting down the hams and stuff. But the next day, we had to cut the meat up to make sausage. My mother canned all that sausage, and that was done on the third day after the meat had chilled out overnight. I can remember us getting down there on a big table and we all had a knife and we’d cut that meat up and then when we had it all cut up, she would season it. They’d run it through a grinder into a big tub and she would can it. And then the next day, she made lard in a kettle outside."
