PAT: "Growing up in the 1950s, picnics were what me and my family did. “We always had a special fall picnic and different places that we would go, state parks and such, that we really loved. When I was older, I thought, ‘You know, there aren’t many picnic cookbooks out there and people probably don’t know what you’re supposed to have. It can’t always be the same thing, or you don’t wanna go to McDonald’s and call that a picnic.’ So, I’ve been coming up with recipes and menus and adventures that might be suggested by a theme for a picnic for over thirty years now.

I have to confess, 'in December, I was a little stumped at first, for what does one do for a picnic in December. I came up with three themes. One is a Nicholas Day Picnic and it’s just all kinds of sweets. Saint Nicholas Day is the sixth of December. If you gather on the sixth and you want to have a picnic, serve sweets like orange rolls and sugar cookies, Angel food cake and hot spiced teas, things like that."

Join us for Soups and Songs on December 1st. We'll be sharing heartwarming stories, like the one below from Betty Coco, with a side of delicious soup. Tickets are going fast at jonesborough.com/tickets

"BETTY: There were eight of us kids, so mom was not frivolous with her gifts. It was a reality of life that toys were considered frivolous. My older sister liked to guess everyone’s gift before they were unwrapped, and she was pretty accurate.

OLDER SISTER: Oh, I bet that’s a sweater.

BETTY: Sure is.

OLDER SISTER: And that one’s socks.

BETTY: Maybe they have a little bow on them.

OLDER SISTER: No, they’re itchy and made of wool.

BETTY: Sigh, another pair of wool socks.

OLDER SISTER: That one seems different.

BETTY: Maybe it’s a doll?!

OLDER SISTER: No, it’s a skirt and jacket set.

BETTY: At least it’s not itchy.

OLDER SISTER: Wait till you try it on.

BETTY: When my older sister started working a few years later, she used her money to buy us Christmas presents, and for the first time ever, there was something different under our tree.

OLDER SISTER: Here, open my gift.

BETTY: Aren’t you going to guess what it is?

OLDER SISTER: Silly, I already know. Open it.

BETTY: Oh, my goodness, it’s a doll! Our sister bought us our very first dolls, she got one for me and each of our other sisters. It was the first time we’d received a toy on Christmas."
