“Looks like we start . . .” the doctor started to say, when a shot rang out and a pine branch splintered above them. The doctor froze in her motion of opening the car door and cautiously looked toward the hill on the right where the shot had seemed to originate. A movement on the ridge above them caught Ransdill’s keen eyes.

“What in the tarnation be you shootin fer? It’s me, Ransdill, and the doctor women!”

"I see you all and I know who ye be. Now git that car out of that rut and ye get back! We don’t want any strangers around here today!”

“Who’s a stranger?"

“Don’t keer about you, Ransdill, I jest don’t want them edjicated, hymn-singin wimin around—there just mighten be trouble in these here hills before sundown and they jest might get in the way and then the law would be a snoopin around here .”

“Wouldn’t be no cause for ye to fret and fume if you weren’t jest likely to be the cause of it. Now listen to me! My wife is sick near to death and these people are goin up to my place to take keer of her. Now you know no one is goin to stop us!”
