In Grove, Oklahoma, it doesn’t take long before someone mentions Franklin Morris II.

Maybe it happens while standing in line at a local store. Maybe it comes up during a conversation about a hidden gem around Grand Lake. Or maybe it appears online in the Grove Oklahoma Community Connection Facebook group, where Morris has become one of the area’s most recognizable and enthusiastic voices.

Part storyteller, part marketer, part community cheerleader, Morris has built a loyal following by doing something surprisingly simple: paying attention to the people and places around him.

Sam Williams is the owner and operator of Grand Lake Sports Center in Grove, Oklahoma, where he has overseen day-to-day operations since 2007 while continuing a proud family legacy that has served this area for generations.

The past, present and future of this operation are woven through three generations of Williams’ family members, and Sam counts it an honor to continue in the footsteps of his grandfather, Sam Williams, and father, Dave Williams, while helping guide the business forward.

Sam says, “Grand Lake Sports Center has always represented far more than a business for the Williams family. It has been a way to serve the community, build lasting relationships and help families enjoy everything Grand Lake has to offer.”

Eight-year-old Pope Drake does not ease into the outdoors after school. The moment he gets home, he heads straight for the creek and pond behind his family’s home, regardless of the weather, searching for snakes, turtles and frogs hidden beneath rocks, brush piles and fallen logs.

According to his mom, Alicia Drake, no stone goes unturned.

Long before Dr. Rick Miller became known around Grove, Oklahoma, as a trusted dentist, he was already learning what it meant to chase speed across the water.

Boat racing has been part of the Miller family story for more than seven decades. It started in 1953 when Dr. Miller’s grandfather and father first entered the sport. Although his father stepped away for several years while attending college and dental school, racing eventually found its way back into the family’s life. By 1970, a young Rick Miller was spending weekends at races, helping in the pits and dreaming about the day he could take the wheel himself.

“I always wanted to race as a little kid being pit crew for my father,” Dr. Miller said.

That dream became reality in 1978 when he officially started racing. Nearly 50 years later, he is still doing what he loves, now as one of the most recognizable names in hydroplane and runabout racing.

Nearly 150 individuals and families participated in the Celebration of Life ceremony April 7, where loved ones who donated an organ, eye or tissues to those in need were remembered for their selfless and heroic acts.

“This is one of those gatherings that it’s hard to put into words, because it holds so many emotions at once,” said Jeanee Kennedy, senior vice president and chief nursing officer for Freeman Health System. “There’s loss, gratitude, there’s heartbreak and there’s also incredible hope. Tonight is about people, it’s about stories and it’s about connection.”

While 67-year-old Steve Reed of Carl Junction, Missouri, spends a lot of time bicycle riding these days, the active gentleman spent more time keeping his feet solidly on the ground until an injury a few years ago prompted a redirect in his physical fitness journey to a greater emphasis on pedaling.

“I was a hard-core runner most of my life until I tore my labrum in my left hip,” Steve says. “I had it surgically repaired in 2013 but was never able to run pain-free after that. So, that’s when I took up cycling. It has kept me in shape, and I found I enjoyed it just as much as I did running for exercise."

"I’m turning 21 soon, and my birthday is coming up. I’ve noticed a lot of my friends post their Cash App or Venmo on social media with things like “buy me a drink” or “help me fund my trip.” It seems kind of easy and low-pressure, but I’m not sure if it’s okay to do. I’d honestly rather get cash than random gifts I won’t use, but I don’t want people to think I’m being greedy or tacky. What do you think?"
