Playing bingo or cards, reading, or just sitting with a patient--every volunteer and patient dynamic is different. However, one thing that remains constant is the positive impact the relationship has on both parties. On this National Vietnam Veterans Day join me in thanking and recognizing the Vietnam War veterans in your life for their service! On this day in 1973 was when Vietnam was disestablished, allowing the last round of U.S. combat troops to depart from Vietnam. Thank you to the soldiers and their family’s for their service and sacrifice.

A little late posting, got to do my part in helping save lives through the gift of blood donation. There is no substitution for blood and there is always a need for it in hospitals around the country. There is also links between regular blood donation and lower blood pressures as well as lower risk of heart attack. Every 2 seconds of everyday there is someone that needs blood. Check out your community and see if there is a blood drive going on or a local donation center near you. Help save a persons life.

Volunteers are such an important role in hospice. You can volunteer and make a difference in the lives of people who are facing serious illnesses, their families and the community by volunteering. Compassus hospice in Lamar is looking to add to our volunteers to help serve our community, so if you would be interested please reach out to myself or the Lamar office (417-682-3809) to get more information.

"We cannot change the outcome, but we can affect the journey" Ann Richardson
Often, the hesitation in becoming a hospice volunteer lies in the unknowns. Unsure if you will know what to say or if you can make a difference- will you reap any rewards from the experience? Compassus Hospice Volunteer Ann Dickey eloquently provided the answer to these unknowns with a beautiful poem she wrote for a patient and family and later read at his funeral. We think you will agree after reading, the world needs more Anne Dickey's spreading our 'Care for who I am' promise:
Endearment
I was greeted with such warmth
Like an old friend-
We had just met.
She spoke of him with tenderness
rubbed his head, stroked his cheek.
Explained he was a quiet man-
Volumes low, introspective, a deep pond.

“Ahhhh but such a good man -
Really…… the BEST.”

She paused.
Fixed the blanket, adjusted the tubing.
She held his hand
His eyes met hers

In That moment I felt what they had.

I came weekly
Stayed
So she could leave (for just a spell.)
She needed to breath.
Her life was waxing
His life was waning
But still they were in sync.

pure, deep love.

His date was approaching
But their bond would never
Expire.
What an honor to witness
Such true endearment.
