first album finished. journey very much not. these are the lessons i’m carrying with me:
1. comparison kills curiosity.
comparison made me feel small and turned creating into catching up. the moment i stopped trying to be somewhere else, there was so much more to discover where i was.
2. the next step doesn’t require knowing the whole path.
almost nothing about this album unfolded the way i thought it would. so much of it came from following an idea, a feeling, a sound, an intuition, a texture before i understood where any of it might lead.
3. the journey is the point.
there were so many times i wanted to hurry toward the version where the album was finished and everything made sense. looking back, the point was never simply to arrive. it was to be changed by everything i encountered on the way there.
4. your value isn’t waiting at the finish line.
i used to think becoming a better artist might somehow make me more worthy of being one. somewhere in this process, i realized my worth was never dependent on how much better i became. it was never something i had to earn in the first place.
5. you are capable of more than you’ve imagined.
there were things i did on this album that an earlier version of me would have sworn she couldn’t do. i only began to see what i was capable of when i stopped waiting to feel ready and allowed myself to move beyond the version of me i already knew.
