🫶 Kindness to each other is part of loving our public lands. In fact, one of the key principles of Leave No Trace is “Be Considerate of Others.”

⛺ When in Joshua Tree National Park, be mindful of trail and campground etiquette, light, and sound. These kindnesses allow each of us to fully enjoy our park experiences.

Reposted from To most people of her time, the desert was an expanse of insignificant desolation. To Minerva Hoyt, it was a “world of strange and inexpressible beauty, of mystery and singular aloofness, which is yet so filled with peace.”

Minerva saw the unique value of deserts and the threats to their survival in California as the majority overlooked the landscape. But she did not simply hope for the desert’s preservation; she was devoted to ensuring it herself.

She defied explorers, politicians, even leaders in the National Park Service while inspiring many with her spirited defense and adoration for desert plants. She advocated relentlessly for these lands to be set aside as a park in the National Park Service.
As a result of her tireless work, 825,340 acres were declared a national monument in 1936. It was not until 58 years later, in 1994, that the land was designated the national park as we know it today.

For , consider walking the Minerva Hoyt Trail from Hidden Valley Day Use area to gaze west towards Mt. Minerva Hoyt, standing at 5408 feet, both named to honor her legacy.
