🌊 River Deep, Mountain High - The Supremes & The Four Tops (1970)
Phil Spector wrote and produced the original with Ike & Tina Turner in 1966, pouring his full Wall of Sound treatment into it - Rolling Stone later ranked it #33 among the greatest songs ever recorded. Ironically, the original flopped in the US, undersold and mostly ignored, while doing far better in Europe. Four years later, the Supremes and Four Tops teamed up for their own version on "The Magnificent 7" - a pairing modeled directly on the Supremes' earlier success recording with the Temptations - and their cover actually charted higher in the US than Tina Turner's original, reaching #14.

By 1963, the Supremes had already put out seven straight singles that failed to crack the Top 40, and even Berry Gordy and Smokey Robinson had tried and failed to give them a hit. Gordy finally handed the group to a rising in-house team, Holland-Dozier-Holland, purely because the Supremes were low enough on Motown's pecking order that they had no say in the matter. Released on Halloween 1963, it became their first Top 40 hit - and once the follow-up single flopped too, HDH regrouped and came back with "Where Did Our Love Go," kicking off a run of five straight .

Wonder wrote the bones of this at 16, while a student at the Michigan School for the Blind - it started as "Oh, My Marsha," written for a girlfriend there in under an hour and stashed in what he called his "tape box" of song ideas. When they broke up, Motown songwriter Sylvia Moy reworked the lyrics and came up with the new title, blending English and French the way the Beatles had done with "Michelle, ma belle." Berry Gordy himself heard the early version and pushed for more development before it was finished. Recorded in late 1967, it then sat unreleased for over a year - Wonder was dealing with vocal problems - before finally coming out January 28, 1969, becoming his eighth top-ten hit.

This one started completely by accident. During live shows, the Miracles used to close out a medley of love songs with a Schoolboys track called "Please Say You Want Me," and Robinson broke off one night into an improvised "ooh, baby baby" ad-lib - the group was so tightly in sync they instinctively started harmonizing behind him, and the crowd went wild. They kept the bit in their act, then built the actual song around it, co-written with fellow Miracle Pete Moore. Robinson himself called it "the National Anthem," saying it's the one song fans ask for wherever they go - and George Harrison loved Robinson's style enough to write his own tribute song, "Ooh Baby," modeled directly on it a decade later.

This song only exists because Holland-Dozier-Holland were staging a quiet work slowdown - Eddie Holland had grown fed up with pay and conditions at Motown, and with no new Supremes material ready, this leftover track from April 1967 got pulled out and finished in a rush over December and January. It became the group's last hit written by HDH before the trio left Motown entirely to start their own labels, and it also marked the final single to feature Florence Ballard - who married her husband the very day it was released - before Diana Ross began recording solely with session singers the Andantes going forward.
