Juneau Schools—except Sít' Eetí Shaanáx Glacier Valley—are expected to open and operate on regular schedules tomorrow, Wednesday, January 7, 2026.

Sít' Eetí Shaanáx Glacier Valley is expected to open on Thursday, January 8, because it is currently having its roof shoveled. For safety reasons, the school will be closed to student and staff attendance while the roof is being cleared due to falling snow and temporarily blocked exits. Staff members should work from an alternate location tomorrow.

School buses will run on snow routes tomorrow. Please be prepared for delays as travel may be slow.

If overnight conditions develop necessitating another districtwide day of school closure, a message will be sent out by 6:30 a.m. tomorrow.

Remember that even when schools are open, you know the conditions in your immediate neighborhood and are the best judge of whether or not to send your child to school. Student absences due to unsafe weather conditions in your neighborhood will be excused.

City and Borough of Juneau (CBJ), Alaska Department of Transportation, as well as Juneau School District (JSD) maintenance and custodial crews continue to remove snow along roads and sidewalks.

Snow loads

CBJ is assessing and monitoring snow load on the roofs of city-owned facilities, including all schools. CBJ and JSD crews spent the day measuring the snow on roofs. No school is currently above design load capacity based on the measurements taken.

Out of an abundance of caution, because we are early in the winter season and will be getting more snow, CBJ has begun removing snow from buildings. A 25-person crew was brought in to assist with snow removal across all CBJ facilities. This crew started clearing the first school roof at Glacier Valley today.

Mendenhall River Community School has not reached the threshold at which roof shoveling is required; however, it will be the next in line, once the roof at Sít' Eetí Shaanáx - Glacier Valley is cleared.

No snow load safety concerns at any specific school have been identified by engineers. Roof clearing is being done as a precautionary measure in anticipation of additional snow fall. All schools will continue to be monitored as we receive more rain and snow.

Avalanche Zones

Neither Harborview Elementary School nor Juneau-Douglas High School Yadaa.at Kalé (JDHS) are located within avalanche runout or hazard zones. School sites have been reviewed historically and through ongoing coordination with local and state experts. CBJ has more information, including an interactive avalanche hazard map, on their avalanche advisory website. You can find it at https://juneau.org/emergency/current-advisory.

JDHS Parking

As work continues to clear streets of snow, parking in the downtown area is tight. Students are encouraged to take advantage of the First Student bussing and/or CBJ bussing to JDHS.

In addition to bus service provided directly to and from neighborhoods, school bus #46 stops at Thunder Mountain Middle School (TMMS) on the way to town in the morning, and on the way back to the valley in the afternoon. Students can park in the TMMS parking lot and ride the bus to school.

While I’m training for a Half Marathon I’ve cut out alcohol. I’ve been actually enjoying trying new mocktails but my go to is club soda with a splash of cranberry. Always fun to put it in a fancy glass and a cute straw!
What’s your favorite mocktail?

Weather Event Onset 3:00 AM (AKST), January 5.

HEAVY SNOW RETURNS TO SOUTHEAST ALASKA ON MONDAY.

Heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 5 to 13 inches. Winds gusting as high as 30 mph.

A weather system will arrive late tonight night and sweep into southeast Alaska, bringing heavy snowfall across the region on tomorrow. Heaviest snowfall rates are expected through Monday morning and into the afternoon.

An initial warmup moving up from the south is expected through the afternoon and overnight hours on Monday, resulting in some locations changing over to a rain and rain/snow. However, weakening winds combined with heavy snow showers on Tuesday will more than likely see a switch back to snow.

Main forecast challenge on Tuesday will be the highly variable snowfall accumulations across the northern panhandle due to the hit or miss nature of the showers, warnings and advisories could be extended into Tuesday.

Fred Meyer will open tomorrow morning at 8. (January 4th). The pharmacy will open at 10.

Happy New Year!
I have health and fitness goals for this year and would love for you to join me!
Last month we did the squat challenge and did 100 squats every day! 3100 squats! Amazing!
I’d like a bigger challenge this year and every day get in 10,000 steps however you want. Walking, running, hiking. Anything! Count all your steps! Walking to the store, vacuuming the house. All of them!
And I’d personally like the challenge of strength training at least three times a week for at least twenty minutes each. It’s so good for us but it’s something I don’t do enough and need to.
Are you in? Let’s bring in 2026 together in the healthiest way! 🥳

HEAVY SNOW POTENTIAL RETURNING FOR MONDAY...

While periodic snow showers are falling across portions of the panhandle Friday and "clear and cold" conditions are expected
through this weekend, forecasters are monitoring the increasing potential for heavy snow Monday into Tuesday.

There is moderate confidence in the timing of the snow to move in from the west Monday morning, spreading inland through the day. Confidence is increasing on a period of heavy snowfall rates with at least 6 inches of accumulation and some potential for locations to see greater than 12 inches.
