Good morning from the Night Crew!

Depending on your location; either snow or rain are continuing apace. Just an update on where we stand forecast wise:

Areas south of the Icy Strait Corridor have largely changed over to rain as warmer air has overwhelmed the remaining colder air.

The warmer air has successfully advanced past Pelican, but has not made it past Hoonah and Gustavus.

Warmer air is trying to advance into downtown Juneau and Douglas; where temperatures have warmed to freezing and are going isothermal (meaning the deeper atmospheric column is also warming to freezing); but entrenched cold air is still fighting to remain in place further north.

Skagway and Haines remain far below freezing, and will not get above freezing through at least the next few days.

Our forecast challenges: How far north (and how quickly) does the rain snow line advance? A faster advance north will see most areas change over to rain or a rain snow mix through the morning; a slower advance north will see snowfall continue longer.

Does the rain/snow line move back south Sunday night/Monday morning, opening up the potential for further snow accumulations for parts of the Icy Strait Corridor?

STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 AM MONDAY...

Additional snow accumulations of 3 to 7 inches and ice accumulations of less than one tenth of an inch. Areas past Auke Bay could exceed 8 inches through today.

Posted 645am 12/26/25:

The winter weather advisories for Skagway and the Klondike Highway, Admiralty Island, and Annette Island have been upgraded to Winter Storm Warnings, as confidence has grown in snowfall potential.

Admiralty Island will see 5 to 9 inches of snow, while Annette Island will see 5 to 8 inches. Skagway and the Klondike Highway will see 10 to 16 inches through 9 AM Sunday, with the potential for additional snowfall afterwards should cold air remain sufficiently entrenched in the far northern panhandle.

A band of heavy snow has set up in the northern panhandle. This band is seen on satellite and it stretches from near Elfin Cove to Gustavus to just north of Juneau. Snowfall rates in this area are over 1" of snow per hour.

To those who have sent in snow and weather reports, thank you! Keep them coming!

The US National Weather Service Juneau Alaska forecasts over 20 inches of snow and rain this weekend and into early next week. Here are a few safety tips to consider when the heavy snow hits:

When possible, limit driving. If you’re on the road, exercise caution and visit 511.alaska.gov to check the conditions of your route.

Call Juneau Police Department’s non-emergency line at (907) 586-0600 if you encounter fallen trees, flooding, slick intersections, or other dangerous road conditions.

Check your neighborhood storm drains for snow and ice. While CBJ Streets crews are working to clear the storm drains, your support helps prevent minor floods caused by drain blockages.

Exercise caution when clearing roofs of snow and ice. Engineering firm RESPEC recommends clearing roofs when they accumulate between 2 and 3 feet of snow, depending on the age of your home.

Clear boats of snow and ice to prevent damage to your vessel and neighboring vessels.
