Many divers dream about having a close encounter with a tiger shark.

Trust me… be careful what you wish for. 😂

Because a shark handler will make sure that dream becomes a reality.

These poor freedivers basically got close enough to kiss this juvenile tiger shark. I don’t know if that’s what they had in mind when they booked the dive, but… congratulations? 😂

This is actually one of the reasons I prefer scuba diving with sharks. I like being underwater where I can see what’s happening around me instead of being at the surface, constantly looking down and wondering where the shark went.

And with tiger sharks, you definitely want to be paying attention.

They’re incredibly curious animals, and when food is involved, they can come very close to divers.

So yes, getting a tiger shark to swim right past your face looks amazing on camera…

But personally, I’ll take a little more personal space. 😂

Would you be comfortable with a tiger shark getting THIS close to your face?

The key with sharks is understanding their behaviour.

Experienced shark divers learn to stay calm, maintain visual contact, control their position in the water, and recognize when a shark is getting too close.

And yes… sometimes you may need to redirect a curious shark away from your personal space using appropriate professional techniques.

Think:

❌ Not panic
❌ Not splashing around like you’re auditioning for Shark Week: The Musical
❌ Not turning your back and sprinting away
❌ Not trying to wrestle the shark.

✅ Stay calm
✅ Keep the shark in sight
✅ Maintain your position
✅ Be deliberate, not frantic
✅ Respect the animal’s space

The goal isn’t to “dominate” the shark.

It’s simply to communicate: “Beautiful entrance, but we’re going to need a little more personal space.” 😂

Sharks aren’t movie monsters.

They’re wild animals with their own behaviors, patterns, and boundaries.

The more you understand them, the less you need fear—and the more you can appreciate just how incredible they are.

Would you be calm enough to hold eye contact with a 8 or 14-ft tiger shark? 👀🦈👇

The Most Dangerous Predator Isn’t a Shark

Someone commented on my videos: “Losing a percentage on your check is better than being eaten by a monster.” 😂

Fair point… but here’s what fascinates me about sharks.

A shark doesn’t pretend it’s something it’s not.

It’s a predator. You know it’s a predator. 🦈

And the more you study them, dive with them, and understand their behavior, the more predictable they can become. You learn their body language, their patterns, and what they’re communicating.

There is no shark standing there saying, “I’m all about integrity, compassion and honesty”while secretly calculating how much it can take from you. 😂

Humans, on the other hand...

We can tell you exactly what you want to hear.

“I’m honest.”
“I’m ethical.”
“I care about people.”
“I would never take advantage of you.”

And sometimes the behavior behind those words tells a completely different story.

That’s what makes human predators so much harder to recognize.

A shark doesn’t need to convince you it’s a good guy.

It just shows you what it is.

So maybe the more interesting question isn’t “Would you rather lose a percentage or get eaten by a shark?”

Maybe it’s:

Which predator is easier to recognize? 🦈😂

Would you rather deal with a predator you can see coming... or one wearing a nice suit?

One thing about juvenile tiger sharks... they’ll definitely keep you on your toes. 😂🦈

They’re curious, energetic, and seem to want to investigate everything. Watching them reminds me of teenagers—always exploring, always seeing what you’re up to.

One of the coolest things I’ve learned from diving and watching experienced shark behavior educators like Ocean Ramsey is that if a curious shark comes in too close, the goal isn’t to panic or push it away aggressively. Instead, experienced divers often use calm, deliberate body positioning and, when appropriate, gently redirect the shark by guiding its snout away while maintaining awareness and respecting the animal’s space.

The calmer you are, the calmer your movements tend to be.

Every shark has its own personality, and that’s part of what makes diving with them so fascinating.

When people tell me “You’ve changed” it’s a high compliment.

Personally? I find comfort in knowing that I will never stop changing. There’s always so much ahead. The person I am today is not the same person I will be in five years, was not the same person I was one year ago, and may not even be the same person I will be in as little as a few days. New ideas, new things to try, new things to integrate.

I hope this is as true for me, as it is for you.

If you let yourself, you will constantly be growing and evolving as you live, take action, make decisions…big and small. But you have to let yourself. You have to be open to change, and open to being different.

You have to kick your own ego to the side and say “I’m not done yet.”

The moment you believe you’re done growing… you’re just…done. Millions of people out there decided to stop growing the moment they walked off the graduation stage, or got their first job. They live in the same city, eat the same breakfast they ate as a child, struggle with the same health issues they did 10 years ago and then complain how they are stuck. You want to be like them, or do you want to be more?

Don’t deny yourself. Allow yourself to grow, change, and evolve. Risk the snide comments or people who want you to stay the same. Stay curious, ambitious, try things out, and be who you want to be. Be bigger. Be better.

You have not reached your final form. What’s one thing you could intentionally grow on just in the week ahead? One thing you could read or learn more about? One thing you could try?

Evolve until you die.

One of the questions I get asked all the time is, “How can you trust sharks?”

The short answer?
I don’t... at least not completely.

Sharks are apex predators.

They’re incredibly powerful, wild, and unpredictable. Pretending they’re harmless or fully trustworthy would do them—and the respect they deserve as a species—a disservice.

Here is the difference between sharks vs people.

Sharks are honest. Their behavior is driven by survival, and when they display what we see as “threatening” behavior, it’s because they’re communicating or responding to their environment—not acting out of malice.

Humans are different. You can never truly know someone’s intentions, and the harm people inflict on each other often has nothing to do with survival.

So if you ask me which animal scares me more... it isn’t the shark. 🦈 It’s the human.
