Just three weeks away from one of the greatest days in our sport: the legendary Challenge Roth. Take a short journey with me, starting back in 1996......
The date was July 14,1996. I was in Roth, Germany doing the ESPN commentating for what was then Ironman Europe.
Lothar Leder was one of the pre-race favorites and, when he realized he had a flat tire in the early morning darkness, we watched as he seemed to melt down.
In my mind I wondered if he could regain his composure before the start of the race.
He obviously did.
That day Lothar made history by becoming the first person to break the magic 8 hour barrier with a 7:57:02. He swam 49:33, rode 4:24:06 and ran 2:43:23 in his legendary performance.
The crowds were huge that day and I realized how important the event that is now called Challenge Roth would become in our sport.
We launched Breakfast with Bob in 2010 in Kona and in 2012 the owner of Challenge Roth, Felix Walchshöfer, was kind enough to invite me to bring the show to Roth. We did the show there for the first time in 2013, and in 2014, we not only did our show, I also worked as the Executive Producer for a documentary on this amazing event called We Are Triathletes which would eventually draw 25,000 people to over 300 theaters around the world.
In my mind the most important triathlon in the world is the Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii and the second most important triathlon in the world is Challenge Roth.
For the past few years the great folks at HOKA have been kind enough to build a studio for Breakfast with Bob on the second floor of their spectacular three decker expo booth and they actually have bleachers so our fans can join us for our interviews.
This year we will be doing interviews on Thursday July 2, Friday July 3 and Saturday July 4. Last year we also did a Championship Edition and we will be doing that again on Monday July 6 where we chat with the top three men and women.
30 years after my first visit to Roth where we watched Lothar Leder change our sport forever, we will be back to hopefully watch history being made once again.
I would be honored if you would tune into our Babbittville YouTube channel and check out our conversations with some of the world's greatest endurance athletes.
I can’t wait!
