When we got a grant to design and create our rain garden through the Flathead Rain Garden Initiative, it included the support of Center for Native Plants. The collaboration was so aligned that we decided we could create in reciprocity, sharing our talents to help each other’s missions.

With their expertise and beautiful array of native plants, our rain garden is finally beginning to bloom.

And with our eco-conscious craft, we are so proud to share this video about converting lawns to native plant gardens.

We handcrafted each flower you see on screen from floral wire, paper, raffia, and merino wool. We also were able to reuse assets from our short film The Farmer’s Daughter, you may recognize the farmhouse with a little makeover! And the lawn is made from naturally dyed organic cotton terrycloth.

Thank you to the entire Center for Native Plants crew for the support and excitement to create in alignment with Nature!

The first review of The Farmer’s Daughter is in, and we are so genuinely moved.

As a small studio, you pour everything into a film and then send it out into the world hoping it lands. When someone takes the time to really sit with it, to analyze it, to feel it and put those feelings into words…  it means more than we know how to say!

Every set starts with a problem to solve. Here’s how we built the Circus Tent for our Calliope music video. 🎪

The tent was built on a 4x8’ plywood base, framed with chicken wire and cardboard, and draped in organic cotton canvas from Organic Cotton Plus. Every single stripe was sewn together by hand using organic cotton thread, then assembled into three separate sections so we could get the curve of the top just right and create the illusion that the tent peaked naturally at the center.

The floor is brushed 100% wool felt from Felt Like A Party!, soft underfoot and true to the warmth of the world we were building.

We actually built two versions of the tent. One for the puppet animation, and a second, flatter version for the motion control shot, so we could fit the camera equipment without losing the look of the set. Swipe to see how it came together!

But the dandelion never got the memo that it wasn’t welcome. It grows through sidewalk cracks, in forgotten corners, at the edges of manicured lawns. Unbothered, generous, and genuinely useful.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Every part of the dandelion is edible. The roots support liver health and digestion. The leaves are rich in vitamins A, C, and K. The flowers feed early pollinators when little else is blooming. And the seeds carry your wishes far and wide.

Portland, we’re on our way! 🌲

A The Farmer’s Daughter is heading to the PFCAT Festival, August 18-23, and we are so happy to be part of it. You may have already heard us on the jerry seinfeld. interview podcast, and now we’re bringing the film to meet you in person.

Melissa will be in attendance for filmmaker panel following the screening on Saturday the 22nd. Come ready to talk stop-motion, materials, and the making of it all.

Not every day looks the same at The Sisters Bloom.

Some days we’re deep in the studio, fabricating sets and puppets for our productions. Others we’re outside soaking up the sun, hands in the earth, pulling weeds and planting. Our apprentices have been a huge part of making all of it a reality — from the studio work to the soil work.

This rain garden is a reflection of that. We believe the ethos we put into our films has to live in how we spend our days too. Knowing that matters to the overall vision, and we try to bring our values into every aspect of what we do, both as a studio and as individuals.

Progress is looking good, and we can’t wait to show you the finished garden this fall 🌱

We’re heading to Indianapolis! 🌻

The Farmer’s Daughter is an official selection at the Indy Shorts Film Festival, screening in their Kids Program on July 24th and 26th.

Melissa will be there in person for a Q&A panel after the screenings, where she’ll answer all your questions on stop-motion, regenerative agriculture, and more.
