Someone in Kalona has been stealing Harris-Walz yard signs; three instances I know of in the past 24 hours. Thefts have been reported to sheriff. Please keep an eye out. Regardless of one’s politics, theft is wrong.

Governor Kim Reynolds signed 185 bills into law in 2024. One hundred and thirty-seven were passed with broad bipartisan support, gaining at least two-thirds of the votes from minority Democrats in each chamber. Forty-eight were passed by majority Republicans largely along party lines. One of the 185 laws that were supported by Representative Hora and Senator Driscoll:

Work-based learning, student teaching changes: Expands work-based learning programs and establishes the Workforce Opportunity Fund using the Unemployment Compensation Reserve fund. Also shortens student teaching requirements for certain students with substitute or paraeducator experience and changes requirements for the Last-Dollar Scholarship program.

Tax cuts: Iowa’s personal income tax would be cut to a flat rate of 3.8% in 2025. The top income tax rate is currently 5.7%. The bill also included changes to last year’s property tax relief law.

Social studies requirements: Directs the State Board of Education to review K-12 social studies standards and requires them to focus on “Western civilization, the United States and the state of Iowa.” It requires teaching about the Holocaust and other specific events in history.
